In the "C:\DOS, C:\DOS\RUN, RUN\DOS\RUN" in the "Editorial" this week. The "General Articles" section has two submissions. David Hagar writes about "Computer Nazi Bulletin Board Systems", an article I don't really understand, but never the less publish for you to try to figure out. From the FN_SYSOP echo I snatched the wonderful "Computer terminology" by Stewart Honsberger (with the authors approval of course) about hacker vs. cracker. Warren Bonner writes about the long overdue change of P4, that never seem to happen, in "You ask for it!!!". He also sent a "Great Student Poem" for the "Poet's Corner" section. In our "International Kitchen" section, Carol makes "Japanese Sock Stock" (yes, that's sock as in footwear!) this week. The fourth episode from "BASTARD OPERATOR FROM HELL" in the "Clean Jokes..." follows "Mine is bigger than yours!" from the archives -- clean or not, once again it's up to you to judge. "A bottle of wine" is a cute story, that should have no trouble passing the "Clean" rule. The section "Fidonet-related sites" has been reviewed by Shannon Talley. Since I haven't received any reply to my email to Joe Jared and the last files sent in by his robot have been identical, I assume he has lost interest in this baby of his, so Shannon will probably be in charge of the list from now on. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 3 11 Feb 2002 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= C:\DOS, C:\DOS\RUN, RUN\DOS\RUN Do you remember what it was like, when you got your first computer? If you've been around for long enough, you probably remember the frustrating feeling, staring at the DOS prompt and not knowing what to do next. Unlike today's installations, with flashy GUIs where not even the most computer illiterate should have any problems mouse-clicking away around all the available utilities, there really was no obvious way to go on from the prompt, unless you were lucky enough to get some helping text file or even a semi-smart batch file, with the installation. Maybe you knew about 'dir' and managed to find something that could execute. But usually it was a real hassle to get things started. Then came Norton Commander and later Windows, to make things a little more user friendly. And suddenly the number of PC's exploded. Just about the same goes for the Internet. At first there was not much you could do, unless you knew exactly what you were going for. Then came WWW and the web browsers, and the use of Internet exploded. Now picture the ordinary BBS. Isn't that the same thing all over again? You sit there staring at what look's suspiciously similar to a DOS prompt, and are completely dependant of helping text files to get you started, if you're a newbie. Suppose we could get something that is to a BBS what WIMP was to the OS and Netscape was to the Internet? Could that make the BBS world explode just like the other two did? Or can the painful truth be, that the BBS is as outdated as the steam engine? But for the objects of a few enthusiasts, maintaining engines on road, rail and sea, they are now nothing but picturesque nostalgia? ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 4 11 Feb 2002 ================================================================= GENERAL ARTICLES ================================================================= Computer Nazi Bulletin Board Systems David Wade Hagar, 1:229/448 We've all seen these people, the "nazi's" of various things. In the TV show of Seinfield he coined the term "Soup Nazi" to describe a person who was obsessive about soups and said lines like, "NO! No more soup for you!" and took people's soups away. What does this have to do with computer you ask? It is simple, just like the ever feared "Library Nazi" (librarian who is obsessive about if you put a book on a shelf just one book away from its desired slot) or the very common "Kitchen Nazi", I think many of those around the world know this kind of person and thus they need no real introduction except that they consider a kitchen theirs, step inside and you may wish you were dead. Well, there's another one known as the "Computer Nazi". What exactly makes a Computer Nazi? Well, put simply a Computer Nazi is a person who believes or acts like they know everything about computers. Not only that, but they also expect everyone else to simply agree with them. If you don't, then you must not know what you are doing at all. Some Computer Nazi's really do know a great deal about computers and have really good ideas but that doesn't stop them from having a mind closed shut to ideas and methods different from what they learned or currently practice, mind shut like super re-enforced titanium gates lined in lead. Another thing that creates a Computer Nazi at times is the ever popular god complex of system administrators. The kind that would watch over a visiting Computer Science specialist with decades of experience on top of his or her training to make sure they didn't screw anything up. No one knows what they are doing compared to these people (at least that is what they have built up in their minds). A Computer Nazi will often boot people off of their systems for doing something "incorrect". An example of this is one of my first BBS experiences. The system operator didn't like logon scripts, feeling they screwed things up if written wrong and was tired of helping people write them. So, if you logged in too fast, you were booted and not allowed back in. Could they screw something up if written wrong? Perhaps, if written complete wrong, after actually installing and running the software used (WWIV for DOS) I discovered that the only thing an improper logon script could cause was the modem to hang up after 3 incorrect tries or perhaps the user timing out at the worst case situation. In other situations the user simply screwed up their defaults or something like that. Did all that many users use logon scripts? No. Did the ones that used them have scripts that were written that badly? Not after one or two tries. It was simply that the system operator didn't want scripts used for whatever reason. Many Computer Nazi's will also use random excuses as to why they do things a certain way. Case in point, the above example of the system operator kicking people off for using scripts for logon. When asked by me to explain why (years later at a kind of BBS reunion) this system operator went through excuses that ranged from saying that it screwed up the system more often than not to the fact that the users FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 5 11 Feb 2002 who used such things would generally not properly log out or would camp out on his modem for hours. After going through those and also stating various things that "that kind of user" did finally this system operator rested on saying "well, I just don't believe in them". That is a key difference between a Computer Nazi and someone trying to protect their system. If you go deep enough you find out that they just don't like it (whatever it happens to be at the time). Are there a lot of Computer Nazi's out there? In some cases yes, they are everywhere, however, they are not all bad. A Computer Nazi is the most likely to make sure that a corporate network stays online, because no one gets away with anything. A computer Nazi is also probably the one who will give you the straight shit on what he or she knows about (the trouble can then be finding out what is just personal opinion stated as fact and what he or she actually does know about). However, the unwillingness to embrace any new ideas makes a rather large problem when dealing with Computer Nazi's in a situation where they must serve the public. Oh yes, they can be nice and put on a false smile (at least most can) but they tend to be able to scare people away from their areas when the ideas and methods they use are challenged. This makes a Computer Nazi exceptionally bad at running a BBS in many ways. New users are sometimes bombarded by rules and regulations that they must adhere to or they can be booted off; have online time reduced to something that is completely unusable. What does the Computer (or BBS) Nazi say about this? They simply state a truism, "It is my system, if they don't like me and they don't have to call it." However, when providing a service would it not make sense to take an attitude to get people to want to go to your system? Probably, but the BBS Nazi doesn't see it this way, they see it as everyone would just do it the "right way" with little room for free will in this "right way" of doing things. A BBS Nazi may also chase users away from other systems by posting from his or her BBS to a networked message area and belittling not only his or her own users but other peoples users as well. This is exceptionally bad for message networks sometimes; especially since no one really like to confront a BBS Nazi about their habits, it is even more difficult than trying to convince a politician not to lie. They may say they won't practice being a BBS Nazi again, but they will time and time again. How do I know this? It happens on my own system, people belittle my users on message networks until they do not wish to post to them. These users then leave because the reason they called in the first place was to participate in discussions online. Should a BBS Nazi not be allowed on a network? Not exactly, but people should not let them get away with chasing users away, how would this be done? I have no idea; perhaps moderators should step in (even if they agree with the viewpoint of the BBS Nazi) and ask them to be nicer about their opinions. Or perhaps BBS Nazi's should just let people be people and not bother trying to hit them over the head with ideas and methods they don't want. That would in the end, be far simpler than the customary method of thumping people over the head with a hammer of ideas and thoughts until they say they agree or leave. FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 6 11 Feb 2002 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Computer terminology Stewart Honsberger, 1:229/604 xxx> hacker access denotes maliciousness and willful attemps [...] Sorry, but I have to stop you here. {sigh} Hollywood has re-defined far too many terms in this day-in-age, and rather unfortunately people appear to believe all of it. :/ A "Hacker" is a person with a great interest in things technological - specifically and especially computers. Steve Wozniak is a hacker. He was one of the most popular members of the "Homebrew Computer Club", until Apple took up too much of his time, and it became too difficult to share information without divulging company secrets (the competitors were represented in the club, and listening in earnest to every one of Woz's words). Hackers are people who push the limits of computers to see where they can be taken. They are fascinated with the ability to reach across an ocean and interact in nanosecond-time with another human who has the same interests. (All the while being dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, drinking Jolt in their room, with their favourite tunes playing.) Hackers build, program, investigate, seek, dumpster-dive for discarded equipment, and assimilate information - all for the eventual goal of reaching a zen-like state with these machines. A goal that they'll never reach; a condition they're overjoyed to accept. Hackers attempt to gain entry to systems considered to be secure in order to learn about security measures and counter-measures. As a result, hackers make the best network security personnel - so long as their job doesn't detract too much from their hobby, that is. The beginning and end goal of a hacker is learning. Knowledge that they can only learn through trial and error - gained at the end (and expense) of their own hands. Hackers think in binary - the most elemental, logical form of thinking known to exist. Every condition is true or false - +5V or 0V. The things in their world, unlike those in the human world, exist for a reason. All behaviour can be explained, problems sought out, solved, and advances can be made. A day's acheivement for a hacker could be to discover a 'ping' sound from within the annels of their server room, or to figure out how to activate that last register within their new CPU, or to find that one glimmering hole in the new, highly lauded security system. Hackers are not vindictive, they are some of the most intelligent people in our society and seek only to learn. Kevin Mitnick found himself the unfortunate victim of government and media plans to create a threat in the public's eye, and there the struggle began. FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 7 11 Feb 2002 Now we have crackers. Groups of people, often young, naive, and almost always misguided - but occasionally very intelligent individuals who readily accept the highly respected term of 'hacker'. They eat it up so that they may find their 15 minutes of fame. They find and take the spotlight that true hackers work so hard to avoid. The mark of a true hacker is no mark at all. No point of entry, no trace that they were even in your system. Tsutomu Shimomura was fortunate enough to enter his computer time-share location just as Mitnick was transferring data over his T1 line. Were it not for that timing, and for Tsutomu's keen eye (and network monitoring software), Mitnick would have come and gone - unknown to all. Crackers, on the other hand, tend to leave their signature everywhere they can find to put it. Like piss on a wall, they deface websites, alter welcome screens, and generally disrupt daily operations of... well, anything. While the "Central Stupidity Agency" prank was amusing, it was no mark of a hacker - it was the work of a (group of) cracker(s). I'll leave off with something to think about. I'll let the piece speak for itself. ----- Mentor's Last Words - Hackers Manifesto begins ----- Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"... Damn kids. They're all alike. But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him? I am a hacker, enter my world... Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me... Damn underachiever. They're all alike. I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms. Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..." Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike. I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me... Or feels threatened by me... Or thinks I'm a smart ass... Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here... FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 8 11 Feb 2002 Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike. And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found. "This is it... this is where I belong..." I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them again... I know you all... Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike... You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert. This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals. Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for. I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike. ----- Mentor's Last Words - Hackers Manifesto ends ----- ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 9 11 Feb 2002 ================================================================= OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER ================================================================= You ask for it!!! wdbonner@pacbell.net Many years have gone by, and all of them were fun in Fidonet land. However, there has been a low growl in the background about the Policy and it's limitations. That noise has increased with each year until it has reached thunderous proportions. It seems that Policy 4.07 does not seek to settle all the technical problems anymore. That really is no wonder as it was written in the late eighties and amended in the very early nineties, I am told. It was not ever ratified by the SysOps, and thus another howl. Many things have happened over the years that have exacerbated the discomfort of those SysOps who were not content with the way Fidonet Policy was left unfinished, in their opinion. The fifteen years without serious consideration of the technical needs of adjustment to Policy, have left it very precariously located in most of the SysOps minds. The last Z1C election where the SysOps vote ONLY by representation, was the kiss of death to the Policy 4.07. The SysOps began to rebel. Only a few at first, but then many more were to follow in the year since. The problem it seems is the inability of the Policy to give the SysOps what they want, and taking away their right to vote too. I have for years supported the SysOps right to CHANGE Policy. Nothing constructive in this direction until Dale Shipp came into the picture. He offered to do all he could for the project including a echo. Fidopols was re-opened on the backbone. The IC and Z1C have indicated, according to those who are permitted to read the echoes, that needed changes were under consideration. The whole thing is dependant upon the SysOps to netmail their *C's. (IC, ZC, & RC's). Tell them how you feel about the updating Policy. But FIRST, please do familiarize yourself with the Policy per changes below. 8.1 Initiation A referendum on policy modification is invoked when a majority of the FidoNet Regional Coordinators inform the International Coordinator that they wish to consider a proposed new version of Policy. 8.2 Announcement and Results Notification Proposed changes to Policy are distributed using the same structure which is used to distribute nodelist difference files and FidoNews. Results and announcements related to the referendum are distributed by the coordinator structure as a part of the weekly nodelist difference file. The International Coordinator provides copies to the editor of FidoNews for inclusion there, although the official announcement and voting dates are tied to nodelist distributions. FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 10 11 Feb 2002 If it is adopted, the International Coordinator sets the effective date for a new policy through announcement in the weekly nodelist difference file. The effective date will be not more than one month after the close of balloting. 8.3 Eligibility to Vote Each member of the FidoNet coordinator structure at and above Network Coordinator is entitled to one vote. (Hub coordinators do not vote.) In the case of the position changing hands during the balloting process, either the incumbent or the new coordinator may vote, but not both. If a person holds more than one coordinator position, they still receive only one vote. Network coordinators are expected to assess the opinions of the members of their network, and to vote accordingly. A formal election is not necessary, but the network coordinator must inform the net of the issues and solicit input. The network coordinator functions as the representative of the rank and file members of FidoNet. (Here is where the "democracy" questions come in, and are clearly answered. This shows definite and adequate node representation, and should be read as stated.) Bob Short 8.5 Voting on a whole Policy Document Given that Policy is intertwined and self referencing, a relatively simple change may require several alterations of the document. In order to simplify the process, balloting is done on choices between whole documents, rather than individual amendments. In the simplest case, this means voting yea or nay to a new document. If a number of alternatives are to be considered, they must be presented as whole documents, from which one is chosen. (This may prove to be the most important area for change. Implementation is a simple matter really, and can be detonated in minor, and later combined into major versions, thus simplifying the process.) Bob Short 8.6 Decision of vote A Policy amendment is considered in force if, at the end of the balloting period, it has received a majority of the votes cast. For example, if there were 350 eligible voters, 100 of which cast a vote, then at least 51 affirmative votes would be required to declare the amendment in force. In the case of multiple policy changes which are considered on the same ballot, a version must receive more than 50% of the votes cast to be considered ratified. "Abstain" is a valid vote in this case, FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 11 11 Feb 2002 effectively being a vote for not changing the current policy as it simply increases the number of votes required to ratify the proposed change. (This clause already allows for a vote of "responding" *C's, meaning that a majority of /all/ *C's is not required. It is important to distinguish between an abstained vote, and a non-response". A *C opting not to vote, should not be counted as Abstain unless so indicated). Bob Short The document is open for amendments, thanks to Bob Short for his input. If all of you SysOps will cooperate, I am sure the Policy can be updated to better serve Fidonet. GREAT POEM ! Osama Bin Laden, your time is short, We'd rather you die, than come to court. Why are you hiding if it was in God's name? You're just a punk with a turban; a pathetic shame. I have a question, about your theory and laws; "How come YOU never die for the cause?" Is it because you're a coward who counts on others? Well here in America, we stand by our brothers. As is usual, you failed in your mission; If you expected pure chaos, you can keep on wishin' Americans are now focused and stronger than ever; Your death has become our next endeavor. What you tried to kill, doesn't live in our walls; It's not in buildings or shopping malls. If all of our structures came crashing down; It would still be there, safe and sound. Because pride and courage can't be destroyed; Even if the towers leave a deep void. We'll band together and fill the holes; We'll bury our dead and bless their souls. But then our energy will focus on you; And you'll feel the wrath of the Red, White and Blue. The patron at a saloon in a sleepy mid-western town decided to do something drastic about his slow business, so he tied his horse to the bar and put up a sign in the street outside the saloon: "$1000 to the person that can make my horse laugh" Well, business picked up while many people tried to tickle the horse, telling jokes and funny stories. However, the horse did not even smile until one day a tramp comes along. He walks over to the horse, leans to his ear and whispers something that makes the horse break out in a roaring laughter (the way only horses can laugh). The patron is really surprised, but pays the cash as he is a man of honor. However, he didn't want this to happen again, so a new sign is placed in the street: "$1000 to the person that can make my horse cry" This seemed fail-safe, as his horse had become accustomed to various weird attempts and showed nothing but complete apathy. Two weeks went, and the tramp comes into town again. He sees the sign, walks over to the horse and drops his pants. Nobody in this town had ever seen a horse so sad, weeping and crying buckets full of tears. As the patron paid the tramp he asked how he did it. The tramp replied, "the first time I told him that mine is bigger than his, the second time I showed him!" ----------------------------------------------------------------- BASTARD OPERATOR FROM HELL #4 Hook; Line; and Sinker... Oh dear... Hang on, it's payday isn't it?! I'm in a good mood. "Sure. You just go 'rm' and the filename" "Thanks" "No worries" (Now I'm in a REALLY good mood. I ask He gives it to me, and I write it down for later. "No worries at all!" I say, and head to the printers. There's a HUUUUUUUGE pile of printouts there, and sure enough, his is at the top of the pile. I pick it up, split it out of the rest and pour our ink- stained cleaning alcohol all over it, run it over a couple of times with the loaded tape trolley then slam it in the tape safe door some times as well. Beautiful. "Here's your printout" I say "Sorry about the delay, we've got a few printer problems." He takes a look and shits himself. "Well, can I print it again?" he asks, worried "Sure you can" I say "But no promises, the printer's a bit stuffed today" "Well can I print it on laser - is that working?" "Yeah of course, but that'll cost you" I say, oozing compassion for the geek "It doesn't matter about the cost, THIS IS URGENT!" I slide-on back into the printer room and put in the toner cartridge we save for special occasions - the one that prints thick black lines down the middle of the page and is all faint on one side. It took me quite a while to make it like that too. The printout shoots through and I bring it out immediately - I don't want to miss this! "W-w-what's happened to my printout?" he geek-squeals at me. Lucky I wrote that username down - I'm really starting to develop a taste for torture. "Well nothing. I mean sure, it's a little soiled, but that cartridge has already done 47 thousand pages and been refilled 17 times. It's quite good compared to some we get" FIDONEWS 19-06 Page 16 11 Feb 2002 Geek pays up and starts blubbing. "Hey now. There's no reason to cry! Have you got a disk with your work on it?" He gives me a box of diskettes and I step inside and run them across the bulk eraser. I come back out again. "Sorry, I just remembered, our machine is on the fritz, you'll have to take these to the other side of campus to the machine there, it'll print them ok, and it had a brand-new toner yesterday." "GREAT!" "No worries. Oh, and hold the disks above your head the whole way there, the earth's magnetic field is particularly strong today." "Huh?" "No arguements, just do it." If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
