This in "Some aim to enjoy, some only to destroy" I saw a note in Shannon's list of "Fidonet-related Sites" that he too was sent a virus as 'thanks for all the work you put into the Snooze'. We were blessed with three articles for this issue. First out is former editor Frank Vest with a bunch of "Ideas For Articles". Then an article from Henk den Adel about an exciting and rare (if you miss it you'll have to wait 40 years for the next time, I think) fenomena on the evening sky. Read more about it in "Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus...". Finally, in "The PPP BBS and its virtues" Petko Bossakov writes a few words about an interesting technology that is pretty popular in his city, but seems to be neglected over Fidonet. "New Echo Announcement: Traks And Demos" is about just what it says, announcing a new echo. Good luck Paul Williams, you may need lot's of it to successfully launch a new echo in Fidonet today. In our International Kitchen, we finish Carol's Japanese culinary journey with "Japanese Sardine Snack Attack". In the jokes section, above mentioned Henk sent in "Yes No", something on the 'cry wolf' theme. And of course there's one from Warren, as usual, "Something good is...". ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 3 6 May 2002 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= Some aim to enjoy, some only to destroy Isn't it strange how different people look upon what's rewarding pastime here in life. Some of us spend lot's of time and effort to try to spread a little joy to the world, like e.g. us that work to make this little publication. And then there are people that feel great only when they can destroy as much as possible for others. I'm talking about computer viruses. Since I became Fidonews Editor I receive appr. 3-4 viruses by email to editor@fidonews.org a week. Almost all of them, I have been able to delete on the server before I even got them, but this week I was lazy at one occasion and did get not one but two of the works of those sorry excuses for human beings. I have one computer where I test all new programs, and for different reasons I cannot have an anti-virus program running on this, so it got infected. The rest of my network have anti-virus protection, that took care of the attack. But the infected computer caused me enough unnecessary work. Time and effort I could have spent on more productive things. Thank you very much whoever sent those viruses to me. What kind of miserable lifes do you live? Do you plan to waste the one and only life you have, on highly improductive work like this? Whatever do you get out of proving to the world that you only take up space for no good and waste resources for those that are entitled to them because they contribute to mankind in a positive way, unlike you. And then one cannot help thinking about how kind Microsoft is to those saboteurs. Windows gives all kind of help to the virus makers, with functions like automatic running of macros, easy access to the entire network (while my son has a heck of a time to log on to the net and still not always is given access to the shared resources he is supposed to access), locking of started services so they can't be stopped, entries in the registry as well as EXE files and DLL's so they can't be erased and much more. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 4 6 May 2002 ================================================================= GENERAL ARTICLES ================================================================= Ideas For Articles By Frank Vest 1:124/6308.1 Some of you feel that the way to save Fidonet is to gather more Nodes. Others feel that more Users are needed. Some believe that both are needed and a few feel that we should just enjoy what is left of Fidonet. What ever you feel, believe, think or whatever, the Fidonews needs articles to enjoy. Here's some ideas for articles: 1. How to Promote BBSs. Tell us what you do to promote your BBS. What newsgroups do you advertise in. Do you have any other places that you advertise? What do you put in your ad? How many time have you been shot at/accosted while trying to advertise your BBS? Hits/misses? What kind of rotten fruit did they throw. Bullets/weapons used. How long were you in the hospital afterwards? :-) 2. Advertise in the Fidonews Send in an ad for your BBS to the Fidonews. Hey, it will be published in the Fidonews echo and on the Internet. :) 3. Who the heck are you? Tell Fidonet a little about you. We're all family here. It might be interesting to know who some of you are. What do you do in your spare time? Hobbies (other than and including Fidonet)? Where are you from? Do you have a big family? Single? What kind of work do you do? Recent birth of children/grand children? 4. "Normal" Articles in the Fidonews "Web Page Reviews" Write on on your favorite Fidonet related page. Write one on your page. Just write one! :) "Software Reviews" Got a favorite? Write an article about it. "Fidonet Interviews" Do you know anyone that is a software author of Fidonet Software? How about utilities that are used by Fidonet Sysops? Interview that person for the Fidonews. 5. How do you promote a/your Web Page? What search engines do you submit to? Ideas and knowledge on how to get better rankings in the search engines. What to avoid. Anything else that helps us get our Fidonet related Web Pages in the public view. FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 5 6 May 2002 6. None of the above None of the above fits?? Well, write something! Dream up a topic and write an article about it. Geesh, if I can dream up topics, you can too. Regards, Frank ----------------------------------------------------------------- Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus this week at a glimpse. by Henk den Adel, 2:280/6415 Between May 1st and 10th planet Mercury can be spotted in the evening skies. Opportunities are favourable for an obserever in the northern hemisphere. The crude ASCII figure beneath gives you an idea how the sky would look, approximately one hour after sunset. The situation is shown for 50 degrees north, on May 7th. Slight deviations from this sketch will occur for observers in Madrid or Stockholm. In Stockholm the angle between the horizon and the imaginary line between Jupiter and Venus is somewhat smaller, in Madrid this angle is larger, whereas in Caracas this imaginary line is nearly perpendicular to the horizon. The easiest way to start is Venus. This planet is so bright you hardly can mis it. About 10 minutes after sunset you must be able to spot Venus. For a more trained eye it is even visible when the sun has not yet set. Mercury is more difficult to find, half an hour after sunset you can try to find it using a pair of binoculars. Air polution and low clouds might degraded its luminosity, beyond visibility with the naked eye, when you wait until approximately one hour after sunset. About two hours after sunset Mercury sinks below the horizon. Mercury can be found roughly 10 degrees from Venus. In stead of fumbling around with triangles, just fully stretch out your arm and form a fist (like when punching). The angle between the left side and right side of your fist is roughly 8 degrees. Venus is the brightest of all, Jupiter is somewhat fainter, Mars the faintest. Jupiter and Venus shine white, Mars is coloured a kind of red, Saturn and Mercury are yellowish. On May 10th Venus and Mars seem be be very close in the sky, less than the diameter of the full moon. However their actual distance will be an odd 100 million kilometers. The visibility of Mercury will deminish gradually as a function of time and after May 14th it will be very difficult to spot it in the bright evening sky. Next favourable opportunity to see Mercury in the norhern hemisphere will be early October this year. Figure 1 The evening sky, May 7th, at sunset + 1 hour. * Jupiter FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 6 6 May 2002 . Mars *Venus Saturn . . Mercury West North West _____|________________________ Horizon __________________________|____ Happy planet gazing! ----------------------------------------------------------------- The PPP BBS and its virtues Petko Bossakov, 2:535/1 Since I've joined Fidonet, I haven't seen any serious talk about the PPP BBS, its benefits, and the way it works. That's why I'm writing this article with the hope of stirring some discussion about it. A PPP BBS is a successful merge of the best things that the old-school BBS and the Internet provide. It is basically a computer on which typical Internet services like http, smtp, pop3, irc and nntp are run. Of course, all these work over the TCP/IP protocol. However, it's not an Internet server. Where's the catch? It's dial-up. Users access it by using the PPP protocol (i.e. Windows' Dial-Up Networking). This makes the PPP BBS something like a publicly-accessible Intranet. Why would anyone run such a thing? If it's not obvious, I'll fill you in. Like a BBS, it has the locality (yes, it can be a good thing that all the callers live in the same town). It has the great community (there's always a friendly sysop to assist you). And it's free. Completely, non-commercially, totally, anti-capitalistically free. If you don't take the telephone charges into account. However, unlike a standard BBS, it's also easy to use. Who doesn't know how to visit a web site with their favourite browser? And who doesn't have a standard e-mail client? It is possible to connect such a BBS to Fidonet. All it takes is a standard mailer to be run during ZMH, and some popular gateway software to make echomail accessible through a news server, to forward netmail to users' personal e-mail boxes, and to create html indexes for the file distributions. It is also easy to set up; Windows XP and most Linux distributions include everything needed. Unix-based systems also provide another advantage: based on the username you can either shell to a standard FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 7 6 May 2002 BBS software, or to pppd. Having in mind the stated above, I believe that the PPP BBS is one way to ensure that Fidonet has a future. If many sysops set up such stations, it would attract callers and encourage software developers to make the integration of such systems with Fidonet easier. Looking forward to your comments, Petko ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 8 6 May 2002 ================================================================= FIDONET NOTICES ================================================================= New Echo Announcement: Traks And Demos Paul Williams, 1:387/710 Announcing a new echo for those who are interested in computer based music and A/V demos. Traks and Demos (tagname TRAKS_AND_DEMOS) is now available on several of the FidoNet echo backbones and should be available in all zones. This echo is for the discussion of how to write/compose music in formats such as MIDI, Amiga MODule, and its descendants such as ScreamTracker/ScreamTracker3 STM/S3M, Extended Module XM, Inertia Tracker IT formats and any others you might think of. It's also for discussion of Trakking programs and players, without regard to the system platform or operating system. So if you still use an Amiga, an Apple or any other computer you're just as welcome as someone using an IBM running DOS, Windows, or OS/2. And if you want to talk about certain composers such as Tran and Reepicheep or demo groups like Future Crew and Cascada then by all means come on and join in. If we can get enough interest we'll also see about restarting the Sound Distribution Channel on the FidoNet FileBone for the distribution and exchange of programs, modules, and samples. The echo rules are fairly simple right now and as founder and moderator of Traks And Demos I'd like to hope they stay that way. 1. Be nice, no personal attacks on your fellow echosians please. 2. Alias's are allowed but let's keep them clean. 3. The primary language of the echo is English like most others. If you wish to post in another language, that's fine, but please provide an english copy so the rest of us can follow along. 4. The moderator reserves the right to make up additional rules if the users come up with new ways to be annoying. So please keep rule #1 in mind an play nice. 5. There is no rule #5. And there you have it. A new echo to spend time in and have some fun. Paul Williams aka The Doctor. ### ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 9 6 May 2002 ================================================================= FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN ================================================================= Japanese Sardine Snack Attack 1 c Dried sardines - niboshi 2 tb Shoyu (soy sauce) 1 tb Sake 1/2 ts Lemon juice These little fellers are sold all over the place here in Sasebo! By Warren Bonner A man went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of the state he lived in. After spending the night, his grandfather prepared breakfast for him consisting of eggs and bacon. He noticed a film like substance on his plate and he questioned his grandfather.......are these plates clean? His grandfather replied....those plates are as clean as cold water can get them so go on and finish your meal. That afternoon, while eating the hamburgers his grandfather made for lunch, he noticed tiny specks around the edge of his plate, and a substance that looked like dried egg yokes....so he asked again... are you sure these plates are clean? Without looking up from his hamburger, the grandfather says...... I told you before, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them, now don't ask me about it anymore! Later that afternoon, he was on his way out to get dinner in a nearby town. As he was leaving, Grandfather's dog started to growl and would not let him pass......."Grandfather, your dog won't let me out. "Without diverting his attention from the football game, his Grandfather was watching, he shouted ......"COLDWATER, GET YOUR BUTT OUT OF THE WAY!!!" 8^) Warm Regards, Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- Yes No. By Henk den Adel, 2:280/6415 A married couple is preparing their May holidays. The woman is packing luggage and asks her husband for advise what to pack. Woman: "Should I take this sweater?". Man : "No". Woman: "And what about this blouse?" Man : "Yes" Woman: "And these pants?" Man : "No" Woman: "What do you think about these shoes?" Man : "Yes" the man replies. And he continues to reply "No" and "Yes" in strictly this order. FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 11 6 May 2002 After five minutes the woman notices that her husband replies in an automatic way over and over again. She snaps to him: "You don't listen, you just answer Yes and No, without even looking at the sweater or shoes. The man replies: "Oh no, I'm doing careful calculations, anticipating the amount of luggage we will take with us, since last year we took twice as much as we needed, so by answering alternatingly Yes and No, I hope to halve the amount of luggage." ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-18 Page 12 6 May 2002 If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
