What we have is number five in the "Confessions of an Ex-Sysop" series by Steve Townsley. This week he writes about spam. Then there's an article about the attempts to actually make that long overdue change of the Fidonet Policy, also known as P4, happen. This in "A Call to Arms" by Bob Short. A story about an "Old farmer but a fast thinking old farmer" by Warren Bonner, for the jokes section, will conclude the contributions part this week. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-24 Page 3 17 Jun 2002 ================================================================= GENERAL ARTICLES ================================================================= Confessions of an Ex-Sysop (5) Steve Townsley stownsley@g7spn.org Like many serious Internet users I have a number of email addresses. Some of which are specifically designed to be unread so I can safely post in newsgroups. Here I use my real email address, probably foolishly becuase some day a 'bot will scan FidoNews for new places to spam. However I have always posted a real email address in the 'snooze so why change the habit of a lifetime. Back to the point. The point this week is SPAM. I was checking one of my little used free email accounts only to discover around 760 bounced messages and a few cries from AOL users to take them (the AOL newbies) off my mailing list. I don't have a mailing list but it soon became clear that my humble free web account had been used as a SPAMMERs return address and the thousands of bounced messages he was expecting were ending up with me. I did what any knowledgeable user would do - I simply added a filter to kill further incoming bounced messages. When all this was happening I began to think back to the days when I ran a BBS and that I never received any SPAM. Plenty of flames when I stirred people to write but no SPAM. As FidoNet grew systems protected themselves from wreakers by archiving message bundles and developing both session and bundle passwords. Together these made it very unlikely that people could SPAM or even gain entry to Fido distribution without a password at some point. Sysops became a very security concious bunch. Most nets made password protection mandatory. Of course the same is not true of the Internet. The trusting souls of the early Internet created relaying and complete system level trust. Wouldnt it be great if the Fido community could write a Fido Mail program for the Internet that guaranteed an almost completely SPAM free environment. Using a new ip port we could have the Complex Mail Transfer Protocol - a completely secure and SPAM free mail system that takes its queue from FidoNet. Parallel to the existing SMTP protocol it would provide a system to system email delivery based on session level and packet level passwords and encryption. A new "DNS" would be set up where public keys would be deposited and mail programs would use those to establish the bona-fide nature of the transfer. A mail transfer agent would query this public key DNS when a mail system connected and if would verify the key. The security would go down to verified users so as each packet arrived the receiver would verify that the packet originated on the claimed system. Further checks could be done too such as the ISP limiting new accounts to 1000 emails per day for the first 30 days and perhaps detection of forged headers. I think FidoNet has a lot to be proud if in the way it has kept it's mail secure and SPAM free. If would be a big challenge to reverse that trend and it would be great if Fido developed a secure Internet mail system as good as the ones it uses in a dial-up environment. FIDONEWS 19-24 Page 4 17 Jun 2002 ----------------------------------------------------------------- A Call to Arms by Bob Short 1:105/38 As some of you know, a good many people from several zones agreed upon a Policy4 amendment proposal, submitted it to Ward Dossche, and asked for a referendum vote. Personal commitments have delayed it's initiation, and Ward has sought the assistance of a trusted colleague. For better or worse, this has open up the opportunity for more sysops from Z2 to review and comment on this draft. As with any document, it is subject to mutually accepted changes until offered for a final vote. We have met once again in the FIDOPOLS echo for this purpose, and invite those interested in taking part to join us there. It is important that each zone be represented as fairly as possible, so that a passable proposal reaches the balloting stage. I urge those in Z2-6 to link with FIDOPOLS, and ask for a 30 day rescan, so that you are aware of what we have done, and know what (if anything) to comment on. The conditions and people involved in attempting to change Policy (for the first time in 13 years) are at an optimum. Let us take this time to work together in creating a document which all can feel good about. Bob Short FIDOPOLS Co-Moderator bsbbser@juno.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-24 Page 5 17 Jun 2002 ================================================================= CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES ================================================================= Old farmer but a fast thinking old farmer. By Warren Bonner This fellow had owned this large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back forty, had it fixed up nice, picnic tables, horse shoe courts, basketball court, etc. The pond was fixed for swimming when it was built. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond as he hadn't been there for a while. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end of the pond. One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!" The old farmer replied, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim or get out of the pond........ I only came to feed the alligators!" If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
