Read about it in the "Cruise Ships" article in his column this week. Some information about the "International Genealogical conference", originally posted in the FN_SYSOP echo, now shamelessly cut out from there by this editor and published in the Fidonet Notices section. I hope Steve Hayes doesn't mind. In Frank Vest's column he explains how he makes those nice ASCII comix he's been pleasing our readers with the last couple of weeks, this in "How'd you do that!?!". And this week's comix is called "Cownting on us", another episode from the life of our very own doggy Fido. As Warren now is back again, we once again have a couple of jokes from his endless collections. First out is "Lessons from Mom", one of those cute lists. Second is a hillbilly joke, "Nagging Wife", not a very nice story, but then hillbilly jokes usually aren't, are they? ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-08 Page 3 24 Feb 2003 ================================================================= OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER ================================================================= Cruise Ships wdbonner@pacbell.net Hello friends in this and foreign lands! In the WWII and Korean wars, I served my country with pride and honor. Being in the United States Coast Guard/Navy in the north Atlantic and Arctic oceans 1943 to 1946 on the worlds largest, fastest, newest diesel-electric ice breaker, armed like a baby battleship, at that time was very exciting. Our homeport was Boston, Mass. In north Atlantic waters that had 20 to 60 foot waves most of the time, was very trying on one's ability to walk, or even stand without hanging onto a standard or life line, even for a teenager! We were very happy when we entered an ice field, that calmed the raging sea, and the ramming of the ice field was easier to take. You see, ice breakers are "round bottomed" ships so that ice fields cannot crush them, they just run a-top of ice field, about one third their length, then their thousands of tons of dead weight break the ice up to 30 feet thick. Often that starts a "crack" in the ice field called a "lead" that can run a mile or more ahead of the ship. The ship uses itself as a wedge to force its way forward to its destination. The ship has hulls that are skirted with tensile strength steel up to two inches thick in places. It is very strong but its egg shaped bottom makes it a very hard ride on water or ice. The north Atlantic is noted for its general stormy attitude. In heavy seas she would roll and pitch thirty to forty-five degrees or more. After nine months at sea, one has difficulty walking when the ship makes port, not being used to flat solid ground. One naturally steps out into the air expecting the ships deck to rise or fall, and the sidewalk doesn't! Leaves one looking like a drunk clown to any passer by. In Korea, I was on two "AKA's", Large cargo/Personnel transports. We landed 800 Marines or Army Personnel on alternate nights at Won San or Inchon Korea. These ships carried all the Jeeps, tanks, artillery and ammo for the troops, plus eight LCM landing craft to ferry them from the ship to the beaches. Heavy seas would cause a fifteen degree roll/pitch of these ships. I tell you this so you will appreciate Cruise Ships! If you have never been on one, you may be surprised that they roll or pitch only five degrees by design. At least the ones built from 1998 on. Two hundred thousand tons is like being on the ground most of the time. We occasionally experienced one to two degrees roll/pitch on our cruise on the "Visions of the Sea" cruise ship last week to the Mexico "Riviera". We had not cruised because my wife was afraid of the oceans with respect to any ship. This vacation was the closest one can get to perfection. A perfect way to spend 7 - 10 days. The dining rooms both formal and regular are serving an astounding array of foods all the time. Foods cooked and FIDONEWS 20-08 Page 4 24 Feb 2003 served in many, many recipes. Real orchestra and stage shows every night. All performances, dancing, acting, magic, ventriloquists, etc. were polished and performed to perfection. Two swimming pools, a Casino, four spas, and saunas. Exercise gym on the eleventh floor has all types of exercise machines. Also has fourteen elevators so smooth and quiet... and fast! Well, I've rattled on enough. Web pages are: https://www.royalcaribbean.com/asp/default.asp?NOSID=1 The ships services also include computers in the Library for you to connect via satellite to your own computer at home, (if you leave it on 24x7), or your ISP. All I know for sure is, there is no comparison to a Cruise Liner except the newer aircraft carriers like the Carl Vincent. It is one hundred ten feet wide, where my ship in 1943 was only sixty nine feet wide. From keel to mast head it measures about two hundred thirty two feet, and my ship was one hundred ninety seven feet. Also it is a thousand feet long, about three times longer than the Eastwind W279, in '43. But drafts only 30 feet, where as my ship's draft was 34 feet war time equipped. What a ship the "Visions of the Seas"! Take your wife/husband, (if married), and enjoy a real vacation! No driving for five to eight hours a day, two or three days to get where you want to go, and back, and no $2.00 a gallon for gasoline. No worry about parking or available rooms, and no Burger King or McDonalds, just a peaceful wonderful vacation. The cost is about the same! The difference is no anxiety about any of the above, or other things that may happen to ruin a vacation. Now back to life and work at home. Warm regards, Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-08 Page 5 24 Feb 2003 ================================================================= FIDONET NOTICES ================================================================= THE INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL ECHO (GENEALOGY.EUR) by Steve Hayes, 5:7106/20 Family history and genealogy are hobbies that are growing in popularity in many parts of the world. Genealogy proper is the study of people's lines of descent - who their ancestors were. Family history is a bit wider - it is concerned not only with who one's ancestors were, but with what they did, and how they related to the communities they lived in. When BBSs started, family historians quickly discovered that they were a good way to communicate with others. When BBS networks got going, they found it was a good way to make contact with people in other places who could help them with their research, or even to discover relatives. At a time when most people calling BBSs were interested only in the technical side of computing and computer communications, family historians provided a growing body of non-techie users. Nowadays all the glamour in computer communications is attached to "the Internet", and many people have been gloomily (or joyously) predicting the death of the BBS and the BBS networks. Family Historians have also found uses for the Internet. They have created Web pages to show their family trees, and there are several Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists for family history. But for those in the know, the relatively humble BBS echo remains one of the best methods of communication. For one thing, there is now just too much material out there. The newsgroups are huge, and because they don't have "TO" lines, it is very easy to miss replies to messages one has posted. On BBSs, offline readers have developed sophisticated keyword searching which are ideal for genealogist, and make it easy to find messages with surnames one is interested in. HISTORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL ECHO The first genealogy echo on Fidonet was in Zone 1, and its echo tag was GENEALOGY. In those days of 2400 bps modems, it was too big to transport economically outside North America, and most of the messages were only of interest to people within North America. That's when the International Genealogy Echo (GENEALOGY.EUR) started. The International Genealogical Conference started humbly as a local conference on Capital ComTech BBS in Pretoria, South Africa in June 1988 when Steve Hayes persuaded the sysop, Geoff Dellow, to open a genealogy message area. In May 1989 Capital ComTech joined Fidonet, and the genealogy conference became a national echo on Fidonet within South Africa. Africa was then part of Fidonet Zone 2, and in August 1989 Niel Uys, the South African Regional Echo Coordinator, began sending it to Germany, and because the echo was reaching Europe and became the Zone genealogy echo for Zone 2, it was called GENEALOGY.EUR to distinguish it from GENEALOGY, the North American genealogy echo. A FIDONEWS 20-08 Page 6 24 Feb 2003 little later the UK was added, and soon afterwards the Europe-South Africa link went through the UK. In about September 1990 Zone 1 (USA & Canada) was added, and Zone 3 (Australia & New Zealand) joined in about the same time, and Africa split from Zone 2 and became Zone 5. This makes the GENEALOGY.EUR echo tag something of a misnomer now, though the echo tag is not meant for human beings but for electronic mailers. It has, however, misled some sysops into labelling this conference on their BBSs as "the European Genealogy Conference". This is incorrect, and it would be better to call it the "International Genealogy Conference", or the "Genealogy and Family History Conference" or something like that. In the USA it might be wiser to label it the "Foreign Genealogical Conference". THE FUTURE At the moment GENEALOGY.EUR is distributed in Zones 1, 2, 3 & 5. It would be good if it could be distributed in Zones 4 and 6 as well. Such an echo should be quite popular in eastern Asia, as many eastern Asian people, particularly the Chinese, have traditionally kept good records of their ancestors. So I hope that Fidonet sysops in all countries, on all continents, will consider making the GENEALOGY.EUR echo available to their users. Steve Hayes of 5:7106/20 Moderator of GENEALOGY.EUR E-mail: methodius@bigfoot.com shayes@dunelm.org.uk WWW: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7783/bbs1.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-08 Page 7 24 Feb 2003 ================================================================= FRANK'S COLUMN - FRANK VEST ================================================================= How'd you do that!?! By Frank Vest 1:124/6308.1 Since no one has asked me how I make the Fidonews Comix, I thought I'd tell you anyway. :-) Note that most of the Fidonews Comix that appeared when I was Editor were simply copied from older Fidonews articles. When I was Fidonews Editor, I used a text editor and tried to copy the Fidonet dog along with other ascii drawings. Since I didn't really try to make a weekly thing or put them in a "comic strip" format, it worked. The carriage return and line feeds of the text editor made the job of editing the drawing a real pain. When trying to move a drawing or copy, I'd end up with a combined drawing and spend a lot of time sorting out the two, or more, drawings into their individual drawings. For the ones most recent, I found that using "TheDraw" is a good way to edit the ascii drawings. You can copy and move stuff a lot easier with TheDraw since it doesn't insist on line wraps and carriage returns on each line. Just be sure to keep the 72 character limit in mind and save your work as "asciI", not "Ansi". It's also a good idea to check the finished comix with a plain text editor to be sure you haven't left some strange characters in the article. Be sure to use only ascii characters that you can type on a regular typewriter. The high ascii and such just don't work well. I guess that some talent for art is required, but I hardly cownt.... ... I hardly count myself as an artist. Grab some ascii pictures and play with them. You might be surprised at what you can do. The Fidonews needs content. The ascii comix are a means to say something or express one's self, ideas, thoughts, beliefs and other things in a way that can be humorous and entertaining. Most news letters, newspapers and such have some form of comics or cartoons in them. Without such "breaks", a newsletter or paper can get real "stuffy", IMHO. You all try playing with some ascii and see what you come up with. It really isn't that hard. :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-08 Page 8 24 Feb 2003 ================================================================= COMIX IN ASCII ================================================================= Cownting on us _____________________________________________________________________ * | Everyone's|| * | Get moooving and spread the| | \ |cownting on|| \ |word | | \ |_ us. || \ / ____________________________| | |\ | _________|| |\ \/ | \\ | \ (__)|/ | \\ | \ (__) Woof! __ | \\|| \(oo) | \\|| \(oo) \ / \ | \||\ \\/ | \||\ \\/ /|oo \ | ^^ \|| | ^^ \|| (_| /_) | \\ || | \\ || _`@/_ \ _ | \\|| | \\|| | | \ \\ | \|| | \|| | (*) | \ )) | ^^ | ^^ |__U__| / \// | \\_ | \\_ _//|| _\ / | \_ | \_ (_/(_|(____/ | _________________________|___________________________________________| | ______________ | ____________ __ | | __________ | __ | | We are here\ / \ | | | | | / \ | | to stay ____\/|oo \ | | | Fidonet | | /|oo \ | |________| (_| /_) | | | | | (_| /_) | _`@/_ \ _ | | |__________| | _`@/_ \ _ | | | \ \\ | |______________| | | \ \\ | | (*) | \ )) | ___|__________|___ | (*) | \ )) | |__U__| / \// || XT ____ ____ | |__U__| / \// | _//|| _\ / ||640K ||--|| |20MG|| _//|| _\ / | (_/(_|(____/ ||__________________| (_/(_|(____/ | ______________________________|______________________________________| ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-08 Page 9 24 Feb 2003 ================================================================= CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES ================================================================= Lessons from Mom wdbonner@pacbell.net 1. From morning till night (and sometimes later), she was always complaining about something. The only time he got any relief was when he was out plowing with his old mule. He tried to plow a lot. One day, when he was out plowing, his wife brought him lunch in the field. He drove the old mule into the shade, sat down on a stump, and began to eat his lunch. Immediately, his wife began haranguing him again. Complain, nag, nag; it just went on and on. All of a sudden, the old mule lashed out with both hind feet; caught her smack in the back of the head. Killed her dead on the spot. At the funeral several days later, the minister noticed something rather odd. When a woman mourner would approach the old farmer, he would listen for a minute, then nod his head in agreement; but when a man mourner approached him, he would listen for a minute, then shake his head in disagreement This was so consistent, the minister decided to ask the old farmer about it. So after the funeral, the minister spoke to the old farmer, and asked him why he nodded his head and agreed with the women, but always shook his head and disagreed with all the men. The old farmer said: "Well, the women would come up and say something about how nice my wife looked, or how pretty her dress was, so I'd nod my head in agreement." "And what about the men?", the minister asked. Farmer replied, "They wanted to know if the mule was for sale." ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-08 Page 12 24 Feb 2003 ================================================================= BEN RITCHEY'S FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= -=:{ FIDONet Software Reference }:=- Type: M=Mailer T=Tosser B=BBS D=Door C=Comm/Terminal P=Points E=Editor I=Internet U=Utility ?=Info .- - - - - - - - - - -+- - -+- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -. |Software: Author |Type |URL, Contact, Ver, Notes Help Node| `- - - - - - - - - - -+- - -+- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -' Argus |M |http://www.ritlabs.com/argus/ 2:469/84 | | argus@ritlabs.com Tel: 373-2-246889 | | v3.210 on Mar 20th 2001 BeeMail: |M |http://beemail.gexonline.net 1:105/10 Stephen Proffit | | beemail@gexonline.net BinkleyTerm XE |M |http://btxe.sourceforge.net 1:1/102 | | v2.60XE/Gamma-6 on Nov 11th 1998 BinkD |MI |http://2f.ru/binkd/ | | maloff@corbina.net | | v0.94 on Jul 24th 2000 Fidonet to Internet: |MI |http://www.terminate.com Bo Bendtsen | | sales@terminate.com | | v2.00 on Mar23rd 1997 FrontDoor, FD/APX: |MTPC |http://www.defsol.se 2:201/330 Definite Solutions | | sales@defsol.se 1:1/101 | | v2.26SW & v2.33ml FD, v1.15 APX Husky Project |MTPUI|http://husky.sf.net | | v1.2.2 on Dec 28th 2002 InterMail, InterEcho,|MT |http://www.ifido.com 1:1/133 Allfix | | sales@ifido.com | | v2.50 IM, v1.19 IE, v5.13 AF Radius (based on |M |http://fido5012.narod.ru/ 2:5012/38 Argus) | | fido5012@zaural.net Tel: 7-3522-469463 | | v4.009 on Jan 2nd 2003 Terminate |MBP |http://www.terminate.com | | v5.00 on Aug 7th 1997 Tmail |MI |http://www.tmail.spb.ru v2608 WildCat! If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
