"Ground hog day" as we call it. I rolled out of my rack, walked to the shower, shaved, and prepared myself for the day. I marched up the four flights of ladders to my office, started a pot of coffee, turned on CNN, opened CNN's web page on my computer, and started working on my morning briefings. The seas were calm that morning, and as the smell of brewing coffee started to wake me up, I heard the CNN correspondent tell a story of a man who was arrested in Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, NY for trespassing because he refused to take off a T-Shirt shirt that said, "Give Peace a Chance". According to new sources, he purchased the T-Shirt in the very mall that had him arrested. Crossgates mall represents, or rather is, a shining example of democracy and capitalism. However, one cannot practice democracy or free speech in this mall. The man was arrested not for speaking, chanting, raving, nor making speeches. He was simply wearing a T-Shirt that had the logo, "Give Peace a Chance". I slumped in my chair. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. A man was arrested because the owners of the mall, Pyramid Management, did not like what he was wearing. It was not vulgar. It was not racist. It was certainly not un-American. I am a Sailor on Active duty currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I have served my country faithfully for nearly 17 years. I serve and protect the constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic. The actions of Pyramid Management, who is the parent company to Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, New York, tramples on the essential principals of American soldiers and sailors. This morning, I am ashamed to acknowledge the owners and management of Crossgates mall as American citizens. I will continue to fight for your rights. It is my duty. I have the watch. Every soldier and sailor prays for peace. Nobody wants war. But do not misunderstand me, we are prepared to strike hard and fast against the enemies of the United States. We will faithfully follow the orders of the President of the United States and those appointed over us without hesitation. We have the watch. I pray those in the community who sit in judgment of this incident, do so with the god in their soul and the constitution in their right hand. For the community of Guilderland, New York; how much longer will these un-American activities take place before both the you, the owners, companies, and employees of the stores within the mall act like Americans? Will you sit by your televisions and watch and wait as security within the mall beat people? Will you wait for security to FIDONEWS 20-11 Page 5 17 Mar 2003 start shooting people in firing squads? When will you stand up for your constitutional rights and act like an American? While deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, I have the watch. Who has the watch back home? Shannon Talley United States Navy, Deployed ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-11 Page 6 17 Mar 2003 ================================================================= FIDONET SOFTWARE REVIEWS ================================================================= The Java(tm) Telnet Applet By Frank Vest 1:124/6308.1 Recently in the Fidonews, a discussion of the future of Fidonet and BBSs was going on. Of the things batted around, the forefront seemed to be Web access to FTN message areas. The origin of BBSs and Fidonet are rooted in dial-up access, however, to evolve and simply survive in todays world of instant messaging, IRC chat and web forums, Fidonet and BBSs must offer the same, or similar options. With this in mind, and a recent discussion with Thom LaCosta under my belt , I want to offer this review as a thought to help Fidonet and BBSs. >> The Java(tm) Telnet Applet << http://www.first.gmd.de/persons/leo/java/Telnet/ or http://javassh.org/ While not a "web interface" in the sense that was being discussed, this is a method of giving web users access to a BBS that has telnet capabilities. For the Java telnet app to work, the Sysop must run a HTTP server. Your ISPs server won't do it. The setup, while not overly difficult (if I can do it :)... care must be taken to follow the instructions. As I said, this is not a "web interface" in the terms one would normally think, but there are advantages to The Java Telnet Applet. With this method of offering access, the user gets full access to the BBS.... including the door gams and other features that the BBS has to offer. >From the web site: The Java(tm) Telnet Applet is a fully featured telnet program that allows users to connect and login to remote hosts via Internet or Intranet using their WWW-Browser only. Not only it includes telnet compliant connection services, but also the ability to dynamically load additional Terminal Emulations and Modules. While this is not a total answer to all of the ills, it is an option that can and should be considered. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-11 Page 7 17 Mar 2003 ================================================================= OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER ================================================================= The following is a true story wdbonner@pacbell.net An elderly Florida lady did her shopping, and upon returning to her car, found four males in the act of leaving with her vehicle. She dropped her shopping bags and drew her handgun, proceeding to scream at the top of her voice, "I have a gun, and I know how to use it! Get out of the car!" The four men didn't wait for a second invitation. They got out and ran like mad. The lady, somewhat shaken, then loaded her shopping bags into the back of the car and got into the driver's seat. She was so shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition. She tried and tried, and then it dawned on her why. A few minutes later she found her own car parked four or five spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into her car and then drove to the police station. The sergeant to whom she told the story nearly tore himself in two with laughter. He pointed to the other end of the counter, where four pale men were reporting a car jacking by a mad, elderly woman described as white, less than five feet tall, glasses, curly white hair, and carrying a large handgun. No charges were filed. Brings new meaning to a senior moment! <<<<<<>>>>>>> An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two elderly gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant, and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly." The other man said, "What's the name of the restaurant?" The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What's the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know ... the one that's red and has thorns." "Do you mean a rose?" "Yes," the man said. He turned toward the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?" <<<<<<<<>>>>>>>> One day, while a woodcutter was cutting a branch of a tree above a river, his ax fell into the river. When he cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, "Why are you crying?" The woodcutter replied that his ax has fallen into water. The Lord went down into the water and FIDONEWS 20-11 Page 8 17 Mar 2003 reappeared with a golden ax. "Is this your ax?" the Lord asked. The woodcutter replied, "No." The Lord again went down and came up with a silver ax. "Is this your ax?" the Lord asked. Again, the woodcutter replied, "No." The Lord went down again and came up with an iron ax. "Is this your ax?" the Lord asked. The woodcutter replied, "Yes." The Lord was pleased with the man's honesty and gave him all three axes to keep, and the woodcutter went home happily. One day while he was walking with his wife along the riverbank, the woodcutter's wife fell into the river. When he cried out, the Lord appeared and asked him, "Why are you crying?" "Oh Lord, my wife has fallen into the water!" The Lord went down into the water and came up with Jennifer Lopez. "Is this your wife?" the Lord asked. "Yes," cried the woodcutter. The Lord was furious. "You cheat! That is an untruth!" The woodcutter replied, "Oh, forgive me, my Lord. It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I said 'no' to Jennifer Lopez, You will come up with Brittany Spears. Then if I also say 'no' to her, You will thirdly come up with my wife, and I will say 'yes,' and then all three will be given to me. But Lord, I am a poor man and I will not be able to take care of all three wives, so that's why I said 'yes' this time." The moral of the story is whenever a man lies it is always for an honorable and useful reason. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
