Let's not delve into the why's and wherefore's of all this, just suffice it to say that we, the new revitalized NAB are asking your help to eliminate any of the "we are better than you" attitude that was prevalent over the past couple of years. There's been far too much petty bickering, name-calling and mud- slinging since the NAB/z1b break took place. This divisiveness must stop - we're all in this hobby together to achieve a common goal. We feel this change will move us a giant step closer to reaching it. This change should benefit every node in Fidonet - especially in light of the constant attrition we're seeing in zone 1 of Fidonet. Fidonet definitely does NOT need continuation of what went on over the past few years, nobody wins, everybody loses. If you have any thoughts, suggestions, or comments that you feel would be helpful, please let us know at your convenience. I guess I should explain. :) Net124 has had a computer that handled all of the Echomail for the Net since before I was a Node in Fidonet. We, in Net124, lovingly called this machine "The Echo Machine", or "TEM" for short. I might be a little off on my history since TEM was around way before I even became a Node in Net124, or Fidonet, but I believe that the computer we called "TEM" was bought by the Net. It was maintained by an "Echo Fund" via donations. One person in the Net, "The Keeper of TEM" kept the machine at their home and maintained it out of those funds. No, this wasn't a CRP. The donations were voluntary and even if you didn't donate, you still got the benefits of TEM. No, this wasn't just a Node number in the Nodelist. This was a machine that was passed from "Keeper" to "Keeper" through time. This was a physical transfer of hardware. The new "Keeper" picked up the computer from the former "Keeper" and took it to his/her home. It was set up and configured and a separate phone line connected to it. A lot more than a simple Nodelist change was involved here. As of Nodelist.096, TEM, 1:124/1 is no more in Net124. :( This might not sound like much and you might think "So what? What's this got to do with Fidonet as a whole??". Well, I'd like to think that our little Net124 "TEM" wasn't/isn't the only TEM that was/is around. Back in the days when all mail was sent via direct modem connection, a Net benefited from a "TEM" greatly. Think of it. A Net with 100+ Nodes and each one had to have or make it's own connection to another Node or feed, sometimes by long distance telephone calls, to get Netmail and Echomail. An Echo Machine could connect to one feed for one LD cost and then feed the local Nodes via local calls. Cost to the Nodes was cut dramatically. "TEM" was a "God Send" and made a lot of Fidonet happen. Without these machines, can you imagine what Fidonet wouldn't have been? So, what has this to do with the end of an era? Just this. As Fidonet has grown and declined, so has the technology grown and declined. Fido technology was the thing back when the Internet was little more than a file transfer system for those that could afford it or were part of some organization that had it. Fidonet had the graphics and the ability for the "common" person to use it. The person off the street could connect to a BBS and communicate with others from around the world. As we, Fidonet, decline, we are now using the technology that was once below us to keep Fidonet alive. FIDONEWS 18-15 Page 5 9 Apr 2001 Maybe we should think on this and think of all the "little TEMs" that were, and might still be out there.... sitting in some person's home and churning out the mail that comes into it. Maintained by some person that does this just for the fun of it. Maybe we should thank these little machines and the persons who run them. Yes, it's the end of an era in Net124, but not the end. Fidonet might not have these little machines for much longer, but Fidonet will go on. The end of one era is just the beginning of another. Keep the faith and keep Fidonet going. Use the technology of today just like the little TEMs of the past used the technology of their day. Keep it going and grow. In final thought, I'd like to say a thanks to Paul Lentz, the last "Keeper of TEM" in Net124. Kudos to you and my thanks for your efforts. TEM may be gone, but I know you will still be there to feed those of us in Net124 that seldom thank you for the effort. Thanks TEM!, and Thanks Paul! Kind regards, Frank ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: "Kay Shapero" To: Date: Thursday, April 05, 2001 7:14 AM Some Observations On How This Thing Works Kay Shapero 1:102/524 Ok, this isn't an article about how FIDOnet is supposed to work. It's not an article about how FIDOnet ought to work either. What it is, is an article about how FIDOnet appears to work as observed by yours truly over the last ten or so years. FIDOnet is an anarchy. Whatever the rules, in practice it is maintained by consensus, and if enough people don't agree, it falls apart like the proverbial shack where the termites held hands. A slime mold makes a good analogy. The slime mold organism is an amoeba which lives in the leaf mold of a forest. Once a year, these amoebae are drawn together by pheromones and form a sheet from which grow in turn sporulating bodies which release spores which become more amoebae. Then they all split up and go their separate ways. Now all amoebae in the group are still independent organisms, so if you take a stick and scatter the slime mold sheet, all that happens is that the individuals split up, then go reform someplace else. OK, what does this have to do with FIDOnet? For starters, every sysop in the net has or should have a copy of the nodelist of the entirety of FIDOnet. With the exception of a relatively few systems which don't have listed phone numbers, any sysop can theoretically call any other system limited only by the cost of making the phone FIDONEWS 18-15 Page 6 9 Apr 2001 call, and perhaps some technical problems between their equipment. This is still as true as it ever was, back before Policy 4 or its predecessors. All those nodes, capable of independent communications, held together only by agreement as to how to do so. But what about Policy 4, you ask? Isn't that a set of laws? And doesn't the *C structure count as a "government"? No, not quite. It's sort of like the old joke, "This is a non- profit company. We didn't intend it that way, but..." I don't care what the drafters of Policy 4 intended, the fact is it's a description of a structure, enforcement power flimsy at best. Witness the fact that much of it can be superceded these days (internet feeds, out of area feeds) without harm to the structure. Indeed the structure contains things like echo moderators who aren't even mentioned in P4, but who have recognized duties and actions all the same. (Yes "ECROC" forms a policy document of sorts, but note that it's completely voluntary and not universally heeded.) The various *C levels are routing positions. In such a position you can make yourself useful by ensuring the flow of traffic, or make a pain of yourself by blocking it, but other than that there's far less real power in such positions than many a would be holder has imagined. At ANY level - witness recently when the IC tried to pull a node number, and a lot of other sysops offered a replacement to the sysop in question, from another zone no less. Or events in region 10 a few years back. You don't exercise power by fiat in here, because everybody else has the power to ignore you, and if you annoy them enough, they'll do it. The slime mold splits up and reforms elsewhere without the irritant. The way to exercise power in an anarchy (yes, there is one), is not to try and grab for a position that is not what you think it is. It's done by making people like you, by being helpful, by offering practical advice and all the other things that are what really keep FIDOnet going. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ `Nizze' article, Kay! Let it stand for an hour or so. The batter should be the consistency of a high grade whipping cream. It should coat the back of a spoon well but be liquid enough to slide into shapes easily, so it will conform of the shape of the pan. If the batter becomes too thick to pour easily, add a little water and beat it again until it is the right consistency. Oil an 8 inch, heavy crepe or frying pan with a tiny amount of oil or butter, using a paper towel. The pan must be hot but not smoking. Pour in about 3 tablespoons of batter, or a bit more. Tip the pan all around and spread the batter to make a thin pancake. Brown the crepes on one side then turn them over with help of a metal spatula or fork and cook them for another minute or even less. As the crepes are done, stack them on a plate until needed. Grease the pan after each crepe is made; if your pan is in excellent condition, it may not be necessary after the first 3 or 4 are done. Crepes can be made a day or two ahead and stored in the refrigerator well wrapped in plastic. They also freeze well. FILLING: Mix all the ingredients together with a tablespoon. SAUCE: Mix the honey and rum together. Gently and carefully warm it on low heat. FIDONEWS 18-15 Page 8 9 Apr 2001 TO ASSEMBLE: Divide the mascarpone mixture equally among 13 crepes. Fold the crepes in half, then in half again. Place the crepes slightly overlapping each other in a lightly buttered dish and heat them in a preheated 375 F oven for about 10 minutes. Transfer them to heated plates and drizzle with the honey, or pass it at the table. Recipe (c) Carlo Middione - Vivande Ristorante As printed in SF Examiner Epicure, 4/26/95 Posted by: Tess Mercer Notes: For the filling I used icing sugar and the powdered zest from dried lemon, lime and orange peels [mostly orange]. The citrus skins were scraped of all white pith and left to air dry for several weeks until quite hard. They were then ground to powder in a blender. I used about 1 tsp. I made the filling a few hours in advance to allow the zest to soften and the citrus oils to penetrate the mascarpone. I also worked in a tsp of milk to make the filling more spreadable. For the sauce I used regular clover honey, 1 oz of water and 1/2 oz of lemon juice. I wanted to keep it non-alcoholic to suit the requirements of a guest and I really wanted the citrus accents to come through. I also made just 6 large crepes and rolled them into cylinders. I served them in oblong oven proof dishes, one per serving. Jim Weller MMMMM Joan MacDiarmid in Amherst, NY (working at SUNY/Buffalo) * Origin: =-DING!-= Dinner's Ready! Sometimes, they just aren't as understandable as the Fidonet Technical Standards Committee intended. Lets start with the basics. The nodelist has a specific format. You can't vary off that in some aspects or it will fail to process. That can cause a node, hub segment, net segment, region, or even a whole Zone to fail to process depending on where it fails. YIKES!! Lets not go there ok? The first field of interest for a sysop with IP connectivity, is the 3rd one where the BBSname is traditionally entered. For an IP node, this is the 'system address' space. You list it but once here in the preferred mode if at all possible. You can also list the IP address or an email address if that's preferred. The problem for most NC's is that it's never really 'clear' how the samples and flags work in conjunction. Thats probably because there are many variations. Below is a sample for BINKP/TELNET/FTP type entries. Sample: ,100,ftp.cshenk.com,Virgina_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, (etc). In that case, ftp.cshenk.com is a 'DNS lookup' address for the IP number. If the site has a POTS line as well, list it as normal. If they do not, use -Unpublished- for the phone field, mark them PVT, and enter 300 for the baud rate. Among the flags, enter those which are applicable, omitting those that do not apply. Sample: FIDONEWS 18-15 Page 10 9 Apr 2001 (ION) ,300,CM,IBN,ITN,IFT (With POTS and IP) ,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,VFC,IBN,ITN,IFT While I dont see anyone using it, I could also just plug in the IP address there if it was STATIC. Sample: ,100,24.0.0.1,Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, (etc) Although controversial at this time, a static IP address can also be put in the phone number field by replacing the "." with a "-" and prefacing it with 000. Sample: ,100,Shenk's_Express,Virginia_Beach_VA, Carol_Shenkenberger,000-127-0-0-1,300, The other flags would be the same. Note, do NOT use this if the IP address isnt static! Even the 'gee seldom changes' folks should use the DNS version. If I used just email attachments, I'd enter my email address instead. Sample: ,100,cshenk2@home.com,Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, (etc). Then add the email version IP flags which fit my setup. Sample: (ION) ,300,CM,ITX,IUC,IMI (With POTS and IP) ,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,VFC,ITX,IUC,IMI Now lets say you do both methods. FTP or variation, and email attachment type and want to list both. It can be done. Be careful on field length as each flag must be 32 characters max including the flag! The total line must be 157 characters or less. Sample: ,100,ftp.cshenk.com,Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, 1-757-486-3064,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,IFT,ITX:cshenk2@home.com Note that on the IFT portion I did not need to relist the address. If 'ftp.cshenk.com' resolved to an IP address also capable of BINKP, I would add IBN. If it also FIDONEWS 18-15 Page 11 9 Apr 2001 connected to TELNET, I'd add ITN. Only ITX (email attachment TransX) required additional information be listed. I hope this helps pull things together for people! xxcarol ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 29 March 2001 Draft1 How NOT to list an ION Otherwise known as: How to SERIOUSLY MESS UP A SEGMENT This is the first in a training series for the prospective RC13 who will as of this writing, be known in 2 days or after a runoff. One thing every good RC does, is assist NC's. Sometimes that means assisting them with nodelisting skills. It's especially common to need some help when it's an ION who needs listing, if it's the NC's first. Suprisingly (evil grin) ION's dont have a better idea about how to list themselves than the NC does, commonly enough. That means the NC cant just 'take their word for it' but needs to check some things. Check 1: If they gave you data for the phone field- a. Was it -UnPublished- ? Good if they have no static IP (Special note: Cant be /0 or HUB keyworded) b. If an 'IP' was it starting with 000- ? (NOT 1-000- but 000- !!!!) c. Did it have an email address in the phone field? Take that out if so. It wont process. Check 2: If they use email for passing echomail traffic- a. Did they list it in the 'bbsnamefield' where it belongs or attached to one of the flags for email-attachment methods? b. If they listed it in the 'sysopnamefield' are they aware no software looks for it there and that a prospective contact person looking for 'Joe Smith' from a post will never figure out from a front end mailer (FrontDoor, ARGUS, etc) the address for 'Joe Smith' if the sysop name field has 'pookie@fun.com' as it's entry? Check 3: If they use FTP/TELNET/BINKP etc for passing traffic- a. Did they put the DNS lookup name for their site in the bbsname area or attached to one of the flags pertinent for that? b. If they use both email-attachment methods and an FTP/etc FIDONEWS 18-15 Page 12 9 Apr 2001 type of method, did they list at least one of them in the 'bbsnamefield' (or if static IP involved, in phone and bbsnamefield for email address)? Check 4: Did they remember to remove the flags for modem types- a. ION's in Z1 are 300 baud b. ION's have no modem flags such as V32,VFC etc. They do apply to this situation as no one is dialing you POTS, _even if you are dialing your ISP via a POTS line_. Check 5: Does it fit the specs- a. I'm calling this a draft as I do not know all the specs. one I know is several fields and all 'user flags' are limited to 32 characters max including the keyword and possible : b. Is the total less than or equal to, what makenl can handle? This is uncertain to me but seems to be 168 or so total. Ward Dossche is the only one I know of who ran into an otherwise compliant listing, that hit this marker. Special Note: There is no 'standard' for what we do, in Z1, when faced with the ION NC or HUB. a. In R13, internal net routing is used for the HUB situation (allowing them to do the same thing but no HUB keyword is applied nor will a mailer default route to them). b. ION NC's are a serious problem under P4 due to requirement to route inbound netmail traffic and software that will default to the NC if the node under them is 'PVT' and that a new/returning node with POTS only cant reach them. xxcarol ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By: Jasen Betts To: Ian Moote --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Ian. 23-Mar-01 12:39:00, Ian Moote wrote to JANIS KRACHT IM> And here's the example: Here a question has popped up about adding a modem to an ADSL line. CF> ADSL transmits more than 6Mbps to a subscriber, and as much as 640 kbps more in both directions. An ADSL circuit connects an ADSL modem on each end of a twisted-pair phone line, creating three information channels; a high speed downstream channel, a medium speed duplex channel, and a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) channel. The POTS channel is split off from the digital modem by filters, thus guaranteeing uninterrupted POTS, even if ADSL fails. The high speed channel ranges from 1.5 to 6.1 Mbps, while duplex rates range from 16 to 640 kbps. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members." By: Frank Robbins Editor takes license to point to a Fidonet History Resources Site --------------------------------------------------------------------- I had researched the FidoNet Trademark in January this year and had placed a copy of the FidoNet Trademark documentation (from birth to present) on my FidoNet (Resource - Support - History) Site at: http://winramturbo.com/fidonet/fidores2.htm#Home As I have been collection FidoNet history for several years now and just have started to assemble it into a website before the "sands of time" or politics erase that info. I have noticed over the years of my collection efforts, lots of FidoNet history files are getting misplaced or lost too rapidly. Some people are not aware of the exact picture Tom used in his Trademark. I show an original copy of the Dog and Diskette that was submitted. I also have a link to Basic Facts About Registering A Trademark by US Patent and Trademark Office: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/tac/doc/basic/basic_facts.html It appears that some people should become familiar with those facts before stating an opinion that is contrary to US Patent and Trademark laws. I have visited several hundred FidoNet oriented websites over the years of collecting FidoNet history and have found that some do not give credit to Tom Jennings. BTW, I have been in recent contact with Tom Jennings on about two or three occasions. I can tell you this from other FidoNet SysOps who have tried to contact him, Tom Jennings does not always respond to everyone. I do feel lucky to have received written response from him. (Tom had seen some of my FidoNet history that I posted on another website of mine concerning his FidoNet endeavors through the years.) Janis Kracht also keeps a vigil for the rights of FidoNet! Good for her, too! 8-)) FIDONEWS 18-15 Page 18 9 Apr 2001 Of course, there are more good FidoNet people out there! It is good to see people stand up for what is right and not be passive about it.
