The one dollar bill you're looking at first came off the presses in 1957 in its present design. This so-called paper money is in fact a cotton and linen blend, with red and blue minute silk fibers running through it. It is actually material. We've all washed it without it falling apart. A special blend of ink is used, the contents we will never know. It is overprinted with symbols and then it is starched to make it water resistant and pressed to give it that nice crisp look. If you look on the front of the bill, you will see the United States Treasury Seal. On the top you will see the scales for the balance -- a balanced budget. In the center you have a carpenter's T-square, a tool used for an even square cut. Underneath is the Key to the United States Treasury. That's all pretty easy to figure out, but what is on the back of that dollar bill is something we should all know. If you turn the bill over, you will see two circles Both circles, together, comprise the Great Seal of the United States. The First Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of men come up with a Seal. It took them four years to accomplish this task and another two years to get it approved. If you look at the left hand circle, you will see a Pyramid. Notice the face is lighted and the western side is dark. This country was just beginning. We had not begun to explore the West or decided what we could do for Western Civilization. The Pyramid is uncapped, again signifying that we were not even close to being finished. Inside the capstone you have the all seeing eye, and ancient symbol for divinity. It was Franklin's belief that one man couldn't do it alone, but a group of men, with the help of God, could do anything. "IN GOD WE TRUST" is on this currency. The Latin above the pyramid, ANNUIT COEPTIS, means "God has favored our undertaking." The Latin below the pyramid, NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM, means "a new order has begun." At the base of the pyramid is the Roman Numeral for 1776. If you look at the right-hand circle, and check it carefully, you will learn that it is on every National Cemetery in the United States. It is also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery and is the centerpiece of most hero's monuments. Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United States and it is always visible whenever he speaks, yet no one knows what the symbols mean. The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons: first, he is not afraid of a storm; he is strong and he is smart FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 3 18 Jun 2001 enough to soar above it. Secondly, he wears no material crown. We had just broken from the King of England. Also, notice the shield is unsupported. This country can now stand on its own. At the top of that shield you have a white bar signifying congress, a unifying factor. We were coming together as one nation. In the Eagle's beak you will read, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," meaning "one nation from many people." Above the Eagle you have thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away. Again, we were coming together as one. Notice what the Eagle holds in his talons. He holds an olive branch and arrows. This country wants peace, but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace. The Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows. They say that the number 13 is an unlucky number. This is almost a worldwide belief. You will usually never see a room numbered 13, or any hotels or motels with a 13th floor. But, think about this: 13 original colonies, 13 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 13 stripes on our flag, 13 steps on the Pyramid, 13 letters in the Latin above, 13 letters in "E PLURIBUS UNUM," 13 stars above the Eagle, 13 plumes of feathers on each span of the Eagle's wing, 13 bars on that shield, 13 leaves on the olive branch, 13 fruits, and if you look closely, 13 arrows. : 13th Amendment for the minorities. And 13 items in this list of items on the dollar bill. Do you know this? Do your children know this? Do History Teachers know and teach this? Too may veterans have given up too much to ever let the meaning fade. Many veterans remember coming home to an America that didn't care. Too many veterans never came home at all. "IN GOD WE TRUST" & "GOD BLESS AMERICA" Note: Ol'wdb wants that all countries peoples feel the same for their country. submissions to Frank would be received with pleasure I am sure. Some may feel this history reminder is ill placed, I beg that you remember what this country did not once but twice for other countries that they keep their boundaries and their freedom, and is still contributing to world peace in several places in the world. WDB ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 4 18 Jun 2001 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= "Dead Horses" and "Wet Apes" I direct your attention to the "Humor in a Fido Vein" section. Skip to that section first. Then come back here. Ok... Yeah, those are cute, and kind of funny, but they are also "too true".... We have an organization called Fidonet. It has what passes for a policy. It has members who thump (wank) policy and members who thump (wank) non policy. Those apes that want no policy are attacked by those that have always had policy. Those apes that have always had policy feel correct in their attack "Because that's the way it's always been around here.". Of course, there must be some kind of policy or guidelines or this Fidonet falls apart. The real problem is... The policy that passes in Fidonet doesn't work right. Why? It's out of date for the times. Get real, ZMH is not that critical now. Most traffic is done via the Internet. Yes, like it or not, Fidonet is part of the Internet which is just a big collection of nets. Crash Netmail, while still useful, is over rated. How often is it used? In some areas Crash mail is probably still used, but most files, Netmail and echomail go via the Internet in some form. Heck, the Fidonews is hatched out via an Internet link. But don't forget the apes. It is written that policy must be obeyed "Because that's the way it's always been around here.". So, why can't policy be changed?? Come on, do you want to get sprayed with cold water?!? That's what will happen if you try to change policy. Just ask the apes. It's was tried in the "FIDOECHOPOL" echo a long time back, a proposal was being worked on about a year or so ago for Policy5 and, most recently, an attempt was made in the "FIDOPOLS" echo. Guess what? Yup. That "cold water" and them apes got it then and again. I guess we're riding a "Dead Horse"here.... Speaking of which... Fidonet has three backbone mail systems in Zone1. Yes, three... Backbone.na, Backbone.zib and Backbone.ww. It seems that there is always a problem with someone or group there. I don't know about other Zones since they haven't spoken out. Maybe that "cold water" got them too? I just wonder why Fidonet needs three echomail distribution systems? Is it just because some can't work with others? Maybe it's just that they are "Providing additional Echos to feed the dead horse to increase performance". Maybe there have been some problems, but are three backbones the answer? It does seem that the apes who want to control these things continue to stop new apes from climbing them stairs "Because that's the way it's always been around here". FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 5 18 Jun 2001 Please note that the "FIDOPOLS" echo is still around. Sure, it will die in time. One backbone will remove it for low traffic in time. Maybe others will for some reason(s) as well. Just another "dead horse" that was killed to be ridden. Speaking of horses again. I really can't wait until the next election in Zone1. Judging from past elections, there will be a lot of "dead horses" to ride. One thing is for sure, the best way to win an election is to be unknown... or have enough supporters to find more "dead Horses" for your opponents to ride than your opponents find for you to ride. Either way, if you're known to anyone, you can bet that all the "dead horses" you have ridden in the past will be brought back to you and there will be "bigger whips" for use on them as well as "new riders", "changing standards", attempts to "revive the dead horse(s)", "blaming", "harnessing several dead horses together" and all that other stuff. Of course, if there aren't enough "dead horses" for you to ride, someone will be happy to kill some new ones for you. Now, you try to say that you'll change policy, but watch out for that "cold water" and those apes that will attack you and don't *even* think of discussing things. Just get your flame proof underwear out and saddle that "dead horse" that you will be forced to ride. It's been said that Fidonet is dieing. Nodelist stats seem to agree. Maybe so.... with all them dead horses and wet apes around, it does smell in places. Of course, that banana has been hanging there for a while too. Yuck! Bet that's a little ripe! You can bet that this will never ever change because "This is the way we've always ridden dead horses". You can't change policy "Because that's the way it's always been around here". So what's the final score?? I don't know. You decide. Make it quick, before that final horse dies and that banana gets too much riper. Of course, you'd best watch out for that cold water and them wet apes. Just remember. When all else fails, "Blame the dead horse's parents". Me?? I say "Promote the dead horse to a *C position. :) Oops! Looks like this horse is dead. That's ok. I'll just keep going by "declaring that no horse is too dead to ride". ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 6 18 Jun 2001 ================================================================= EDITOR'S CORNER ================================================================= ?? ERN Charting Committee ?? What is this ERN Charting Committee? Is this another group of apes reaching for that banana? Where are the old, experienced apes, that know that you can't get that banana? Maybe this is a group of apes with a new banana. Could be that they just want to put a new banana up for the old apes to look at. Of course, they could just be "riding a dead horse" in a different way. Anyway, I've received Netmail asking me about the routing in my Net. Why it was sent to me is unknown. I'm not the NC or the NEC. I do handle some of the "Routed Netmail" for my Net, but not the "Echo Routed Netmail" as far as I know. Still... It would be nice to know what the purpose of this "committee" is and what/why they are doing this. From what I Think I understand, they wish to remain anonymous and only one is willing to stand up and be counted for this endeavor. I guess that's ok... if that's what they want. Still, it does make one wonder.... I've connected to the "Z1ROUTING" Echo and there has been at least one question from a Node in regards to who and what this "ERN Charting Committee" is. Kind of makes one wonder what the others have to hide, don't it? So, what is this ERN Charting Committee?? Which ape runs this? Is this a Backbone thing? If so, which one? Is this a "quality committee to find additional uses for dead horses"? Maybe they are just new apes that haven't learned to leave that banana alone "because that's the way it's always been done around here". Could be that they are "Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed, efficiency and echo traffic". Is this something that Zone 1 has "cooked up"? What does the rest of Fidonet think of this? Is the sending of Netmails to people asking questions about who they route to and "private" links considered "annoying behaviour"? I don't know, but I would like to invite them to write an article for the Fidonews introducing themselves. If this "ERN Charting Committee" wants some validity, it won't happen if they hide behind one person and remain in the "backrooms" with no information given to the general Fidonet population as to what they are and what they are trying to do. For now, I think I'll start working on next week's Fidonews.... FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 7 18 Jun 2001 BUTTFIRST! ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 8 18 Jun 2001 ================================================================= HUMOR IN A FIDO VEIN ================================================================= How Policy Begins & Why it won't change Start with a cage containing five apes. In the cage, hang a banana on a string and put stairs under it. Before long, an ape will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the apes with cold water. After a while, another ape makes an attempt with the same result - all the apes are sprayed with cold water. Now, turn off the cold water. If later another ape tries to climb the stairs, the other apes will try to prevent it even though no water sprays them. Now remove one ape from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new ape sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his horror, all of the other apes attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted. Next, remove another of the original five apes and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm. Again, replace a third original ape with a new one. The new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well. Two of the four apes that beat him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are participating in the beating of the newest ape. After replacing the fourth and fifth original apes, all the apes which have been sprayed with cold water have been replaced. Nevertheless, no ape ever again approaches the stairs. Why not? "Because that's the way it's always been around here." *THAT'S* how policy begins and *WHY* it won't change. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Policy Standards on "Dead Horses" Dakota tribal wisdom says that when you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. In Fidonet we often systematically follow other strategies, as a matter of policy, to deal with dead horses. Our research has uncovered the following: 1. Using a bigger whip. FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 9 18 Jun 2001 2. Changing riders. 3. Saying things like "This is the way that we've always ridden dead horses." 4. Appointing a committee to study the dead horse. 5. Arranging to visit other echos to see how they ride dead horses. 6. Increasing (or lowering) the standards to ride dead horses. 7. Appointing a *CC team to revive the dead horse. 8. Creating a training session to increase ability to ride dead horses. 9. Make rules declaring, by fiat, that the horse is not dead. 10. Blaming the dead horse's parents. 11. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed, efficiency and echo traffic. 12. Declaring that no horse is too dead to ride. 13. Providing additional Echos to feed the dead horse to increase performance. 14. Do an Echo search to see if other Fidonet members are more capable of riding dead horses. 15. Declare that horses are, in general, better, faster, stronger and cheaper when dead. 16. Form a quality committee to find additional uses for dead horses. 17. Revisit the original requirements for horses to see if dead horses were undervalued. 18. Say the horse was procured by accedent as an independent variable. 19. Blame the farm on which it was born. 20. Promote the dead horse to a *C position. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 10 18 Jun 2001 ================================================================= COMIX IN ASCII ================================================================= Owls ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ <+,+> <@,@> <*,*> <-,-> <$,$> [`-'] [`-'] [`-'] [`-'] [`-'] -"-"- -"-"- -"--- -"-"- -"-"- drunk owl owl junkie one legged owl shrewd owl greedy owl ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 11 18 Jun 2001 ================================================================= CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES ================================================================= **BUTTFIRST** wdbonner@pacbell.net I have a condition often found in folks of my age. The scientific world is frantically searching for a cure. This is an ailment many of us suffer from and may not as yet have been diagnosed. However, now you may be able to discuss it with your loved ones and try to explain what really happened to you all those times you tried so hard to accomplish something... It's call the "BUTTFIRST Syndrome." It's like when I decide to do the laundry - I start down the hall and notice the newspaper on the table. Okay, I'm going to do the laundry -- BUTTFIRST I'm going to read the newspaper. After that, I notice the mail on the table. Okay, I'll just put the newspaper in the recycle stack, BUTTFIRST I'll look through that pile of mail and see if there are any bills to be paid. Now where's the checkbook? Oops! There's the empty glass from yesterday on the coffee table. I'm going to look for that checkbook, BUTTFIRST I need to put the glass in the sink. I head for the kitchen, look out the window, notice my poor tomatoes need a drink of water. I put the glass in the sink, and darn it, there's the remote for the TV on the kitchen counter. What's it doing here? I'll just put it away, BUTTFIRST I need to water those plants. Head for door and Ack! I stepped on the cat's tail. The cat needs to be fed. Okay, I'll put that remote away and water the plants. BUTTFIRST I need to feed the cat. At the end of day: Laundry is not done, Newspapers are still on the floor, Glass is still in the sink, Bills are unpaid, Checkbook is still missing, The cat ate and then dispursed kitty-litter on the floor around the litter box, and the remote control is in the sink with the glass. AND, when I try to figure out how come nothing got done all day, I'm baffled, because I KNOW I was BUSY ALL DAY! I realize this condition is serious....and I should get help, BUTTFIRST I think I'll read Fidonews and the e-mail. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-25 Page 12 18 Jun 2001 ================================================================= FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= This list is up for adoption. This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. 1. Put the title in two time. The first time should be with an * before it and the second time without the *. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted. Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name.. If you are a Fidonet Service provider such as a "Fido<>Internet", Star Hub or some other such service provider, we can arrange to run your ad on a rotating basis. Ask the Editor. Recipes: Recipes from Sysops, readers or interested parties. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Frank L.
