By Frank Vest 1:124/6308 flv@texoma.net "Discussion" (term used loosely) was started in the Z1C Echo by the Z1C. The idea was to possibly start a Internet Only Net outside of all the Regions in Zone1. This Net would offer help to IONs and offer Node listings to those that wanted to be in that Net. Of course, if a Node didn't want to be in that Net, they could be listed in another Net. Nothing forced, only offered. The response has been varied from "Why are we still discussing this non-issue?" to concerns about other Nets and Regions that are already offering IONodes a place to be listed. Some points of note have been both positive and negative as follows: The new IONet would offer a help system to assist those who join that Net, or Fidonet in general, in finding what they need and, I would assume, help for new prospects in setups and such. The IONet would be closer to the top of the Z1 Nodelist and be easier for prospects to find. An IONet could segregate ION's from the rest of Fidonet due their ability to connect and other issues of software. Instead of an IONet, list some sources on help on specific topics in the ZIN section of the Nodelist. Ask for volunteers to be listed as was, I believe, done in years past with software authors and such. They could have a separate listing as a "Help Node" or "Contact Node" as well as being listed in their own Net/Region. The main thought in this seemed to be to catch any prospective new Nodes that might `fall through the cracks", as it were, in finding help or information about joining Fidonet and offer a place for them if desired or if they could not find a Net that could support them. This discussion was in the Z1C Echo and, I presume, can still be discussed there if you have access. Please see the "Question of the Week" and feel free to submit your article on this. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-28 Page 3 9 Jul 2001 ================================================================= OL'WDB'S COLUMN ================================================================= Parachute Ol'WDB (received from an Internet friend) Charles Plumb, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, was a jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience. One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, "You're Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, You were shot down!" "How in the world did you know that?" asked Plumb. "I packed your parachute," the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, "I guess it worked!" Plumb assured him, "It sure did, If your chute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today." Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, "I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said "Good morning, How are you?" or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor. Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shroud lines and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn't know. Now, Plumb asks his audience, "Who's packing your parachute?" Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory - - - - - - - he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety. Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, or thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. FIDONEWS 18-28 Page 4 9 Jul 2001 As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize people who pack your parachute. I am sending you this as my way of thanking you for your part in packing my parachute !!! You will never know how much you really mean to me. And I hope you will send it on to those who have helped pack yours! Have a great day! My Love and gratitude Always, Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-28 Page 5 9 Jul 2001 ================================================================= QUESTION OF THE WEEK ================================================================= Internet Only Nodes - How? The first time I tried these, I hounded my wife until she gave me the recipe for my Fido friends. Ingredients: 2 cups cooked chicken breast, diced 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded 2 cups mayonnaise 1 red sweet bell pepper, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 5 Tbsp. dill seed or dill powder (I prefer powder),(use juice of one lemon in mix). 2 cups fresh broccoli flowerets, 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper 3 cans of large crescent rolls dough Directions: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Gently mix together the chicken, cheese, mayonnaise, red pepper, garlic, dill, broccoli, and salt and pepper. For casserole: Place crescent dough triangles flat in bottom and sides of a greased-floured Pyrex dish. Pour mixed ingredients into the crescent dough lined dish, and cover top with finely grated fresh lemon zest, then cover with crescent dough. Pinch edges of dough together to seal in the flavors. Brush with beaten egg. Sprinkle with more dill. Bake ten to twelve minutes until golden brown at 375 degrees. ---OR--- Take the crescent roll dough triangles out of the packages and place a spoonful of the mixture in the center of each individual triangle piece of dough. Fold the corners up into the middle and crimp to seal. Brush the outside with a beaten egg and sprinkle with more dill and lemon zest. Place on a cooking sheet and bake in the oven for approximately 12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to sit for 10 minutes before serving. The filling will be hot! ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-28 Page 8 9 Jul 2001 ================================================================= POET'S CORNER ================================================================= SEA FEVER by John Masefield I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sails shaking, And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied.; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-28 Page 9 9 Jul 2001 ================================================================= CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES ================================================================= Good Cook The Sunday School Teacher asks, "Now, Johnny, tell me frankly, do you say prayers before eating?" This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. 1. Put the title in two times. The first time should be with an * before it and the second time, on a seperate line, without the *. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted. (the only real rule in this whole thing) Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File --------------------------------|--------------------------------- Software Reviews (Fido) *.rev | Getting Technical *.ftc Web Page Reviews *.web | General Articles *.art Fidonet Current Events *.cur | Clean Jokes & Humor *.jok Ascii Comix *.cmx | From the *Cs *.css Rebuttals *.reb | Guest Editorial *.gue Advertise *.ads | Recipes *.rec Details: Software Reviews (Fido): Reviews of software for Fidonet and BBS. Getting Technical: Tech articles about Fidonet. How-to and such. Web Page Reviews: Reviews of Fidonet (maybe other) Related Web Pages. FIDONEWS 18-28 Page 21 9 Jul 2001 General Articles: These don't seem to fit in other places. Fidonet Current Events: Elections relating to Fidonet, new Nodes coming in and other such articles. Clean Jokes & Humor: Funny stories and jokes that are not vulgar. Ascii Comix: Those wonderful Ascii Comics that we used to have in the Fidonews. From the *Cs: Letters from the *Cs about what is going on in Fidonet. Rebuttals: Didn't like an article, want to say something in reply to an article? Say it here Guest Editorial: Don't let the Editor get all the glory. Write your own editorial and submit it. Advertise: Advertise your free Fidonet service, Fidonet event or whatever to do with Fidonet that you offer. If you are a Fidonet Service provider such as a "Fido<>Internet", Star Hub or some other such service provider, we can arrange to run your ad on a rotating basis. Ask the Editor. Recipes: Recipes from Sysops, readers or interested parties. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Frank L.
