By Frank Vest 1:124/6308 The "Food For Thought" section is strangely fitting to me this week. It wasn't intended that way, but the powers above sometimes make things fit too well. :-) It's Sunday. It's hot. My air conditioner is out. Isn't that enough?!? Nope. I just called three service places. The first two told me that their Sunday rates are some $90.00 for a service call and up to $160.00 per hour after the 30 minute service call. Whew!! I understand that Sunday isn't a real favorite day to work, but, really!?! Ok.. I guess it's only fair... Yeah, right! On the third call, I was ready. "What are your Sunday rates?" I asked. The answer really caught me off guard. "The same as our weekday rates." came the answer. "We charge $45.00 for the service call." My next question was "How much per hour after the service call?", expecting some outrageous rate. The reply was "We don't charge by the hour. We give you an estimate after we determine what is wrong and what is needed to fix it." Well... After I composed myself (took a couple of seconds), I told them to send the tech. I mean, gee... Even if they charge a high price for parts and such, that shouldn't be close to $160.00 per hour plus parts (which I'm sure would be high priced too). I've messed with air conditioning before and the simplest job can take more than an hour. My real peeve here is; Why should places be allowed to charge according to the day of the week? I didn't ask for my unit to quit on Sunday. I didn't make the tech take the Sunday shift. I didn't ask the company to be open on Sundays. I know... it's their world and I am at the disadvantage. If I want it, I have to deal with whatever is charged for the service at the time. Still... It seems wrong to charge different rates for different days just because they can get away with it. Anyway. That's my input for this week.. You all take care and stay cool if your in a hot part of the world. If your in a cold area, stay warm. Either way, watch out if you need service on your heating or air conditioning. :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-32 Page 3 6 Aug 2001 ================================================================= COMIX IN ASCII ================================================================= Owls ___ ___ ___ ___ <*,-> <*,*> < > <** >, [`-'] [`S'] [ ] "`-'] -"-"- -"-"- "[--- confidential owl super owl minimalist owl cubist owl ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-32 Page 4 6 Aug 2001 ================================================================= CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES ================================================================= submitted by wdbonner@pacbell.com A fire fighter was working on the engine outside the station when he noticed a little boy next door in a little red wagon with little ladders hung on the side. The boy was wearing a firefighter's helmet and had the wagon tied to a dog and a cat. The firefighter said, "Hey little partner, what are you doing?" The little boy said, "I'm pretending to be a fireman and this is my fire truck." The firefighter walked over to take a closer look. "That sure is a nice fire truck" he said with admiration. "Thanks mister" the boy said. The firefighter looked a little closer and noticed that the boy had tied the wagon to the dog's collar and to the cat's testicles. " Little partner," the firefighter said, "I don't want to tell you how to run your fire truck, but if you were to tie that rope around the cat's collar, I think you could go faster. "You're probably right, mister", the boy said, "but then I wouldn't have a siren." ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-32 Page 5 6 Aug 2001 ================================================================= FIDONET BY INTERNET ================================================================= . -- -- -- -- --- -- -- -- -- . | FIDONET-RELATED SITES | ` -- -- -- -- --- -- -- -- -- ' Last update: 10:08 AM 7/31/01 Please send updates, corrections and suggestions to Joe Jared, 1:103/301, joejared@osirusoft.com. This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. 1. Put the title in two times. The first time should be with an * before it and the second time, on a seperate line, without the *. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted. (the only real rule in this whole thing) Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted.
