From Frank Vest 1:124/6308(.1) As you can probably see, this is a Holiday Edition of the Fidonews. It wasn't planned this way, but sometimes things just happen. I found some information, the "rotating" "Food for Thought" happened to come around right and some other things. So... In this weeks edition, we have an article, from me, about Labor Day, a recipe that is quick and easy to fix (can't be doing too much labor on Labor Day :) and much more! I draw your attention to the calender of holidays in September. I think it would be good to get some articles about holidays in your country or "neck of the woods". One thing about Fidonet that is, or should be, is that we are a community. Yes, we are sometimes far away from each other but, through this wonderful thing called Fidonet, we are neighbors. Let us hear how your area celebrates it's holidays... or, how you personally celebrate a holiday in your area. Back to Labor Day; Labor Day in the U.S. tends to be a day for taking a trip to the lake or some recreational area for some fun. Roads are busy with people trying to get to their favorite "spot" for enjoying some end of summer recreation. It can get a bit busy at resorts and such places, but if you enjoy yourself, it's worth the hassle. Personally, I plan to sit at home and let the rest of the people hassle with the lakes and recreational areas. :) I'll watch the TV, read some mail and enjoy the day with my family. Pretty boring, but it's Labor day and should be enjoyed however you celebrate. After all, we've all "labored" for it in one way or the other. :-)) Happy Labor Day to all. Even if you don't celebrate Labor day in your area, I hope your day is good. With the recent elections (if you can call it that), I will be taking over duties as NC for net 121. I believe that net 121 is one of the oldest surviving nets within Region 11. Please correct me if I'm wrong here. There is plenty of work to do to automate things, but progress is being made daily. As recently as five years ago, we had 36 members within our net. Today, we are down to just three nodes. A far cry from just a few years ago. Hopefully, I got an idea that may change all of that. I've already started collecting older computers (garage sales, second hand stores, friends, ect.), and refurbishing them with modems, mail reader software, ect., and donate them to some unfortunate older child along with some basic operating instructions. Get them interested and involved with Fidonet. So what if they can't get onto the internet. Let these young people know there is another network out there that they can join besides the internet that is family orientated. A major local business has recently agreed to donate their old computers as they are rotated out of their network. Between these and local word of mouth, I hoped to gain at least a few members. The habits they learn now may very well stick with them through out their lives. Imagine, active Fidonet members in the twenty second century! If nothing else, it keeps these old computers out of some landfill. My time and expenses are being financed out of my own pockets at the moment. Any contributions (any amount) is always appreciated and will be used towards this purpose. Let's all help to keep Fidonet going. Thanks, Roy Jacobs 1:121/3 Donations: Roy Jacobs 4445 Doncaster Drive Madison, WI. 53711 ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 4 3 Sep 2001 ================================================================= GENERAL ARTICLES ================================================================= A Short History of Labor Day Researched by Frank Vest 1:124/6308(.1) More than a century old, Labor Day is one holiday that is not to honor a hero of war, great historical leader or other famous person/event. It is truly for the working class of people. The first Labor Day parade in New York City was held in September 1982. Two men are credited with playing an important role not only in bringing about the parade but the holiday as well. Matthew Maguire, a machinist from Paterson, N.J., and Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter who helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, are said to have suggested a holiday to honor working people in the United States. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday, and in 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a national holiday. This is not just a United States holiday. Labor Day is observed as a legal holiday on the first Monday in September in Puerto Rico and Canada as well. In Australia, Labor Day is called Eight Hour Day, and it commemorates the successful struggle for a shorter working day. In Europe, Labor Day is observed on May 1, also known as May Day. In the United States, Labor Day has become synonymous with the end of summer and as a kind of "last fling" before school starts for many. ----------------------------------------------------------------- >>>People will be people<<< Submitted by wdbonner@pacbell.net People are often, unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 5 3 Sep 2001 The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and GOD. It is never between you and them anyway. Original Author unknown none the less, a worthwhile read. Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 6 3 Sep 2001 ================================================================= GETTING TECHNICAL ================================================================= W32/SirCam Virus. Some information. From Frank Vest I've received several of these messages via my e-mail and the "editor@fidonews.org" account. Fortunately, my virus scanner will catch them and refuse to let them open. I've since learned how to recognize this type of e-mail. Since this seems to be a common virus and many in Fidonet have some form of Internet connection, I did some looking and found out what this thing is and what it can do. One note: The below text tells most of what this virus does and how to recognize it. I'll add that the e-mail has two files with it when received with Netscape Communicator and the below mentioned message is generally in the first file. The second file is the virus infected one. I now simply delete the mail when I see it. ---- What virus is this? This is a HIGH RISK virus that is spread to email recipients found in the Windows Address Book and addresses found in cached files. The infected email can come from addresses that you recognize. Attached is a file with two different extensions. The file name itself varies. The email message can appear as follows: Subject: [filename (random)] Body: Hi! How are you? I send you this file in order to have your advice or I hope you can help me with this file that I send or I hope you like the file that I send to you or This is the file with the information that you ask for See you later. Thanks --- the same message may be received in Spanish --- Hola como estas ? What can this virus do? When run, the document will be saved to the C:\RECYCLED folder and then opened while the virus copies itself to C:\RECYCLED\SirC32.exe folder to conceal its presence and creates a registry key value to load itself whenever .EXE files are executed. The virus searches for .GIF, .JPG, .JPEG, .MPEG, .MOV, .MPG, .PDF, .PNG, .PS, and .ZIP files in the MY DOCUMENTS folder and attempts to send copies of these documents to email recipients found in the Windows Address Book and addresses found in cached files. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 8 3 Sep 2001 ================================================================= EDITOR'S CORNER ================================================================= When it rains, it pours By Editor flv@texoma.net It's been raining in McKinney, Texas for the past few days. I've always heard that old saying, "When it rains, it pours". I always thought of it as a neat saying since I like old sayings like that. This time, however, it seems very true. I started out the week thinking about what would be in the Fidonews and where would I get the stories and all the other stuff that I always put myself through. I've hoped for submissions and waited, blamed myself for the lack of news and all that. This week, it rained. No, it poured! I started out with a "Food for Thought" that just happened to fall in line with the Labor Day holiday. I decided to do some research and find some stuff. As I went searching, there appeared an article in the mail. I took it and continued searching. I found some stuff on Labor Day and wrote the article on it. Thinking this was going to be all... I searched and found a list of holidays and events from around the world to include. Ok, I thought.. I have some stuff and a joke or two ... not too bad. Then the rain started... No, not outside... it was already raining at my house. I mean the submission of stuff. I think this might be the first Fidonews since I've been Editor in which _I didn't_ write most of it. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU! Keep it coming. How about some articles from the *Cs? :) Frank ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 9 3 Sep 2001 ================================================================= COMIX IN ASCII ================================================================= Owls <*,*> <*,*> /o \_/ | * * [`-// [`o'] [ _ | "owl" -"-"- -"-"- `-----' `-' owl with sling medallion owl surreal owl owl in cave owl ----------------------------------------------------------------- __ Here's Looking at you. :-) __ / \ / \ / oo|\ /|oo \ (_\ |_) (_| /_) _ / _\@'_ _`@/_ \ _ // / | | | | \ \\ (( / | (*) | | (*) | \ )) \\/ \ |__U__| |__U__| / \// \ /_ ||\\_ _//|| _\ / \____)|_)\_) (_/(_|(____/ ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 10 3 Sep 2001 ================================================================= RECIPES ================================================================= Grilled Flank Steak with a Basil-Mustard Marinade 1 pound flank steak 1/2 cup basil leaves, chopped 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1/4 cup olive oil Place flank steak in a sealable plastic bag or a non-metallic container. Pulled from a Fidonet Echo by Frank Vest GOLDEN RETRIEVER: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out light bulb? BORDER COLLIE: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code. DACHSHUND: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp! ROTTWEILER: Make me! LABRADOR RETRIEVER: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? MALAMUTE HUSKY: Let the Border Collie do it. And you can feed me while he's busy. POODLE: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry. COCKER SPANIEL: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark. MASTIFF: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark. CHIHUAHUA: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. IRISH WOLFHOUND: Can somebody else do it? I've got this terrible hangover..... POINTER: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there.... GREYHOUND: If it isn't moving. Who cares? AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle.... ENGLISH SHEEP DOG: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb. FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 13 3 Sep 2001 GERMAN SHEPHERD: All right, everyone stop right where you are! Who busted the light? I SAID, "STOP RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE!" HOUND DOG: ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz CAT: Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. "Why do you do that, Mom?" "To make myself beautiful," she answered. She then began to remove the cream with a tissue. "What's the matter?" Johnny started. "Giving up?" ----------------------------------------------------------------- Work vs. Prison From: Warren Bonner I knew that someone was going to take a closer look at this situation some time and, lo, and behold, the comparison has been made: In prison you spend the majority of your time in an 8x10 cell. At work you spend most of your time in a 6x8 cubicle. In prison you get 3 meals a day. At work you get a break for 1 meal and you have to pay for it. In prison you get time off for good behavior. At work you get rewarded for good behavior with more work. In prison you can watch TV and play games. At work you get fired for watching TV and playing games. In prison a guard locks, unlocks, opens and closes all doors for you. At work you must carry around a security card and unlock and open all doors yourself. In prison you get your own toilet. At work you have to share. In prison they allow you to visit your family and friends. At work you can't even speak to family and friends. In prison all expenses are paid by taxpayers, with no work required. FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 14 3 Sep 2001 At work, you get to pay all the expenses to go to work and then they deduct taxes from your salary to pay for the prisoners. In prison you spend most of your life looking through bars from the inside wanting to get out. At work you spend most of your time wanting to get out and inside bars. In prison you can join many programs that you can leave at any time. At work there are some programs you can never get out of. In prison there are wardens who are often sadistic and psychotic. At work we call them managers! ----------------------------------------------------------------- Quick Thinking.... From: Warren Bonner A man walked into the produce section of his local supermarket and asked to buy half a head of lettuce. The boy working in that department told him that they only sold whole heads of lettuce. The man was insistent that the boy ask his manager about the matter. Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager, "Some jerk wants to buy a half a head of lettuce." As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he added, "and this gentleman kindly offered to buy the other half." The manager approved the deal and the man went on his way. Later the manager found the boy and said, "I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here. Where are you from, son?" "Canada, sir," the boy replied. "Well, why did you leave Canada," the manager asked. The boy said, "Sir, there's nothing but whores and hockey players up there." "Really!!!" snapped the manager. "My wife is from Canada!" The boy quickly replied, "No kidding???? Who did she play for?" 8^) ----------------------------------------------------------------- TOP 10 REASONS From Lesley-Dee Dylan 1:250/201 TOP 10 REASONS FOR BEING DUTCH 1 You can get arrested for growing plants, but not for smoking them. 2 You can make jokes about the Belgians and still drink their beer. As always in Fidonet, I make no guaranties. :) Regards, Frank Vest - Fidonews Editor ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 23 3 Sep 2001 ================================================================= FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= *Fidonet/BBS Software Listing's* -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- BBS Software -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- BBBS Home Page b@bbbs.net http://www.bbbs.net/ ELEBBS- The Elevator Software Productions Web Page elebbs@elebbs.com http://www.elebbs.com/ Hermes II Project (Mac) info@HermesII.org http://www.hermesii.org/ Maximus BBS Support Page (Non Official) sales@lainus.com http://www.vector11.com/maximus/ Mystic BBS http://www.mysticbbs.com/mystic/ Nexus Bulletin Board System groberts@nexusbbs.net http://www.nexusbbs.net/ RemoteAccess Central Bruce Morse bfmorse@rapro.com http://www.rapro.com/ Spitfire BBS Buffalo Creek Software MDWoltz@AOL.COM http://www.angelfire.com/ia/buffalo/index.html Synchronet BBS sysop@vert.synchro.net http://www.synchro.net Telegard BBS support@telegard.net http://www.telegard.net/ Wildcat Interactive Net Server (BBS) Santronics Inc. sales@santronics.com (305)248-3204 http://www.santronics.com FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 24 3 Sep 2001 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Door Software -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Bentstone Capabilities Group info@stonebenders.com http://www.srupc.com/mall Jibben Software scott@jibben.com http://www.jibbensoftware.com/ JNS Software Door Games Rusty Johnson rustyjohnson57@hotmail.com 304-733-0113 http://www.geocities.com/jnssoftware/ PC Pursuits brucep@pop.kis.net (301)240-6653 http://www.pcpursuits.com/products.htm S and T Software Mark Bappe mark.bappe@bozax.iainc.net (770)788-6843 http://bozax.iainc.net/public/ Shinning Star BBS Doors nannette@shiningstar.net http://www.shiningstar.net/bbsdoors/ Sunrise Door Software Al Lawerence al@sunrisedoors.com (404)256-9518 http://www.sunrisedoors.com/ The Brainex System info@brainex.com http://www.brainex.com/brainex_system/ Trade Wars Door Game jpritch@eisonline.com http://www.eisonline.com/tradewars/ 1:299/110 Vagabond Software Bryan Turner vagabond@darktech.org http://vagabond.virtualave.net/ 1:124/7013 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Mail Tossers -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 25 3 Sep 2001 FMail Support wijnstra@fmail.nl.eu.org http://fmail.nl.eu.org/ 2:280/1076 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Mailer Software -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- FrontDoor, FrontDoor APX, Mailer/Point Software Definite Solutions sales@defsol.se http://www.defsol.se/ BinkleyTerm XE Frontend Mailer Software http://btxe.sourceforge.net/ Plantinum Express for Wildcat Santronics Inc. sales@santronics.com (305)248-3204 http://www.santronics.com -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Fidonet via Internet Software -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Argus RITLABS argus@ritlabs.com 373-2-246889 http://www.ritlabs.com/argus/ 2:469/84 BinkD maloff@corbina.net http://2f.ru/binkd/ Fidogate Martin_Junius@m-j-s.net http://www.fidogate.org/ Fidonet to Internet Mailer Bo Bendtsen sales@terminate.com http://www.terminate.com/fido2int.htm GiGo Software http://www.gigo.com/ Internet Rex cruden@cs.ualberta.ca http://plaza.v-wave.com/InternetRex/ Tmail (Russian /w English DL) http://www.tmail.spb.ru/index-19.htm FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 26 3 Sep 2001 TransX Multiboard Communications Inc. support@multiboard.com http://www.multiboard.com/software/transx.html 1:2401/305 TransNet transnet@ressl.com.ar http://www.ressl.com.ar/transnet/ Watergate ramon@sbbs.se http://www2.sbbs.se/hp/ramon/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Point Software -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Definite Solutions FrontDoor APX http://www.defsol.se/ JetSys - This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line should be with an * before it. The second time and second line should without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted. (the only real rule in this whole thing) Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File --------------------------------|--------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Regional News *.reg | Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews*.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Recipes *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth Classified Ads *.ads | Fidonet Software Reviews *.sof Corrections *.cor | If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT FIDONEWS 18-36 Page 35 3 Sep 2001 on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it. Send Articles via E-mail or Netmail, file attach or message to: Frank Vest Fidonet; 1:124/6308 E-Mail; flv@texoma.net Please leave me a message telling me that you have sent an article.
