K. Chesterton (1874-1936) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 2 5 Nov 2001 ================================================================= [ GENERAL ARTICLES ] ================================================================= Let's go Dutch Bj”rn Felten, 2:203/208 Did you ever wonder why you say 'let's go Dutch' and not let's go Irish, Spanish, German or French when you go to a restaurant and want to split the bill? Well, the obvious reason is that the Dutch are very... eh... economical, if not even parsimonious. This is one of the three corner stones that make up the typical Dutch mentality. Parsimony ========= You may be invited for a cup of coffee in Holland, but you probably only will get one cookie and never a piece of cake. If you're invited to a party, you'll be expected to show up after nine in the evening, because then the host can be sure you've already had dinner. Q. Who invented the copper wire? A. Two Dutchmen who found a five-cent coin. Austerity ========= The second corner stone is austerity, especially to yourself. If you live in a country that has been conquered from the ocean, where banks and channels are in need of daily maintenance, it's no wonder that austerity is the foundation of the calvinistic religion that's dominating Holland. The Bible Belt on the country side is strong, but even the city folks have this little guy (can it be the old village preacher Calvin?) sitting on their shoulder waving a 'vermanende vinger' (warning finger) whenever someone commits a breach of the Dutch etiquette. This includes extravagance of any kind. Wealth should be strived for but never to be shown off. Your possesions should be practical, of high quality and may be beautiful. If you buy a car it should be a Volvo rather than a Cadillac. Never try to impress a Dutchman with a showy business lunch. Working hours are meant for work anyway... The 'vermanende vinger' also is waved to anyone that shows in- tolerance as well, which is a contradiction you must learn to live with, because tolerance is the third corner stone. Tolerance ========= FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 3 5 Nov 2001 Don't think for a moment that the Dutch tolerance is about being nice in general, a real softy. No, tolerance is another one of those obligations so necessary to make life in a densely populated country like Holland bearable. The calvinists may show austerity inwards but were among the first to allow freedom of religion. A historic attitude that made way for todays liberal attitude towards cannabis, prostitution, death-help and homosexual marriages -- all legal in Holland. But being liberal means being split. What do you do when one mans freedom affects another mans ditto? Then you have to do like the Dutch, look between the fingers on one hand and wave the 'vermanende vinger' with the other. So where do they draw the limit for the tolerance? Actually everything is allowed as long as it doesn't mean bad business. And the other way around, as long as it's good business you may temporarily forget about the austerity and the tolerance. If nothing else, there's always the saying 'handel is handel' (business is business), that is a perfectly good excuse for almost everything. - If we don't sell weapons to the enemy, how can we afford to go to war with him? as an illegal weapons dealer said on his trial. There's another limit to the tolerance. The 'vermanende vinger' comes up whenever someone or something is threatening 'gezelligheid' the ultimate happiness for a Dutchman. The word comes from 'gezel' which means journeyman but also fellow, companion. The closest I can come up with as a translation is 'cosy company'. The Dutch never say no to a 'gezellige' party. 'Voor de gezellig- heid!' For the sake of good company. But let's go Dutch... ----------------------------------------------------------------- What are Hermes Sysops? By Walter Bowen 1:393/11 Several years ago, Oliver Katigbak posted a message on HERMES_SYSOPS in which he asked "What are Hermes sysops?" Although I've updated my response just a tad for this reposting, it went something like this: It's interesting that you should ask this in the HERMES_SYSOPS echo, Oliver, but not surprising since the "Hermes sysop" is rarely sighted these days. Such a creature is a member of a vanishing, but tenacious breed known more generically as a "Mac sysop," itself an obscure offshoot the larger, but also diminishing family that is most commonly labeled "sysop." Probably one of the most distinguishing qualities of any of these creatures is their elusiveness. Rarely sighted, they exist mainly as phantoms, lurking and perhaps even smirking, somewhere in the FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 4 5 Nov 2001 pre-virtual community of the command line interface and occasionally in a domain known as FidoNet. Even as their numbers have dwindled, a feisty few still persist, but their existance becomes increasingly barren with each passing day. So few outworlders today even possess the knowledge of how to pass through the terminal gateway into their pre-virtual universe that their eventual obscurity is more than virtually assured, it is a certainty. These shapeless, genderless and most often faceless creatures will soon vanish altogether, but perhaps fate has smiled on them nonetheless. Their passing will be a silent and painless one, for even as they wander, their terminals are shrouded in darkness and they still seem unable to read the handwriting on the walls that surround them. So they continue lurking, smirking and occasionally emerging, still mercifully oblivious that reality is encroaching, that it has already enveloped them, and will ultimately swallow completely their shrinking pre-virtual, terminal universe with the elusive command line interface. One day soon as the last one succumbs to time and slips peacefully into the void of the nothing, only their legacy will remain. Believe me, that day is nearer than ever, but the story is not yet over. If you look hard enough you may still detect a few flickering candles in the night. If you're really, really lucky, one of our smiley faces might even yet peer back at you. But hurry. Time is short. Walter Bowen :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 5 5 Nov 2001 ================================================================= [ EDITORIAL ] ================================================================= Misconception: a misunderstanding: wrong idea. By Frank Vest 1:124/6308.1 It occurs to me that some in Fidonet have some misconceptions about the Fidonews. I'm going to make a feeble attempt to explain, and maybe help those with, these misconceptions. Looking in my dictionary, I find the following. YMMV: Misconception: n. a misunderstanding; wrong idea. In reading in the Fidonews echo, I get the idea that the following might be in play; 1. Articles in the Fidonews are/should be written by professional writers, OR, All articles are written by professional writers. Nothing is farther from the truth. We are a group of people. Some might be professional writers, but most are just plain people that use Fidonet as a medium to communicate. The Fidonews is a medium as well. It is made up of articles sent/written by people in Fidonet. These articles are of interest to the author and might, or might not, be of interest to other people in Fidonet. In no way are they, nor should they, be required to be written by professionals. 2. The Fidonews Editor is a professional Editor/writer. Whew!! That's as far from the truth as you can get. :) I'm not a professional anything. I wrote some articles. I didn't think they would be of interest (see next misconception) and ended up as editor. 3. I, as a member of Fidonet, have nothing of interest to say. Many probably think this way. I did, and still do at times. I'm not sure that this editorial will be of interest, but I'm writing it anyway. :) In truth, there is always interest from somebody. Don't use this excuse as a block for not trying. 4. I'm not very good at english, or english is not my native language. How can I write for the Fidonews? I'm not good at english either. I graduated with a C- in english. :) Seriously: For many in Fidonet, english is not their native language. Get someone to help translate for you. One of the strongest points in Fidonet is the willingness of it's members to help each other. Don't let a language barrier stop you from writing something that might be of interest to others. *That* would be a loss to us all! 5. I'm not a software author. I'm not a technical person. I don't have the knowledge to write for the Fidonews. FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 6 5 Nov 2001 So?? Not everyone in Fidonet is a programmer, technical expert or anything else in particular. Write about your BBS that you run. Review a web page that is Fidonet related. There is a list of article sections posted in each Fidonews. Surely there is something you can write about. Folks, this is the Fidonews. The Newsletter of the Fidonet Community. It's about Fidonet and the people in Fidonet. More importantly, the Fidonews _*IS*_ what you make of it. Frank Vest - Editor, Fidonews ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 7 5 Nov 2001 ================================================================= [ REBUTTALS TO PREVIOUS ARTICLES ] ================================================================= Rebuttal to "Zone 2 participation of FidoNews." By Frank Vest 1:124/6308 In last week's edition, Michiel Van Der Vlist wrote his views about why articles weren't submitted by other Zones in Fidonet. I'd like to try to answer some of his thoughts and give my views. For the sake of separating what Mr. Van Der Vlist said, his words will be between the = marks in this rebuttal. = The snooze is zone 1 dominated because potential contributors from other zones are put off by the zone 1 dominance. A vicious circle. Maybe you as editor should ask what the readers outside zone 1 are NOT interested in seeing in the snooze. My list would be: = I really don't see that the Fidonews is dominated by Zone 1. Maybe there are a lot of articles from Zone 1. That doesn't mean domination. I think I have asked what readers would or would not want, inside and outside of Zone 1, in some form in the past. I know I've asked myself that question a lot. It's not an easy question to answer with all the variety in Fidonet, even in other Zones. = 1) Articles that cover topics of only local interest, such as RC and ZC elections. They stir some interest but after the third round it gets very boring. = I'm going to take a guess that this stems from the past position of posting messages as articles in the Fidonews. I said that I wouldn't do that, and I believe I have not. This part is a non-issue. I will say this; If there is an election going on in a Zone, Region or Net in Fidonet, I will accept an announcement of it. I will not have a "blow by blow" of the process as has been done in the past. Announcing the election and the results is, imho, of interest to Fidonet. It lets people know, that might not otherwise know, that an important election is happening in their area. It also lets the rest of Fidonet know that something might be happening or changing that could affect them. Yes, we can all be affected by happenings in other Zones, Regions and Nets in Fidonet. The announcement of the election and the end results are of interest. The process, or "blow by blow", is not. = 2) Articles in a language I can not read. The idea may be good but it is not going to work. The only examples of successful multilangual magazines I have seen are the fodder that airline FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 8 5 Nov 2001 companies feed us to keep our thoughts from hitting the ground at a vertical speed higher than the landing gear can take. = I agree that this won't work. It is a great thought and would be great if possible. I just can't see how. Maybe I'm short sighted. I said in the Editorial last week that Fidonews is "global". We have many languages in Fidonet. To try to cover them all is not within scope. To try to have a language known by most areas is the way to go. English seems to be the closest to an "international language" that we have. = 3) "Tear jerkers" as Sharon Westons' "The warmth of a smile." Maybe in NA culture such stories are an unconditional 'go', but imnsho it belongs in the Salvation Army's Digest or whatever it is called. My response when I see it in FidoNews is: "What's it got to do with FidoNet? = I'm not real sure what is meant by the reference to "Sharon Weston". For the "What's it got to do with Fidonet?" I'm not sure of that either. What some of the articles have to with Fidonet is that they are about people or events that affect Fidonet people. Would it be good to have all articles relate directly to Fidonet? Wouldn't that get boring just the same as anything else? A Fidonews that was all "Technical", "Fidonet Web Page Reviews", "Fidonet Software Reviews" and various other Fidonet articles strictly about Fidonet would get just as boring, imho. = I respect the tradition of FidoNews editors to publish anything not in violation of the (NA?) law. Maybe it is time however to review this policy. Maybe it is time to define the topic of FidoNews and restrict articles to those that are on topic. = What would the "topic" of Fidonews be? I would like to see more articles that are "Fidonet related", whatever that means. However, I don't see a problem with ascii comix, poetry and other articles. We are people and Fidonet is about people as much as it is about anything else. What I do see as a problem is that the complaints that there are no articles relating to Fidonet are not met with submissions of articles related to Fidonet. The complaints that the Fidonews is one sided are not met with submissions from the other sides. I'll end this with something that if I haven't said, I should have; I'm not like former Fidonews Editors. I'll probably be unlike any future Fidonews Editors. I have done many things different and changed many things in the Fidonews. I've tried different approaches and other FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 9 5 Nov 2001 ideas to improve the Fidonews. All this, in the interest of Fidonet. Some have been good and others not so good. But, when you boil it all down, it's not Frank Vest that makes the Fidonews. It's Fidonet! The Sysops, and people in Fidonet! It *is* what you make of it! Best wishes to All, Frank Vest - Editor, Fidonews ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 10 5 Nov 2001 ================================================================= [ OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER ] ================================================================= Ol'WDB's Column wdbonner@pacbell.net In last weeks Fidonews in a General Article, Michiel Van der Vlist said: "Why do we see so few contributions from other zones? Zone 2 in particular? The main reason for the zone 1 domination of FidoNews is imho the fact that it ... is zone 1 dominated." This is funny and most FidoNews readers are not deceived with such statements. The only way to dominate Fidonews is to prevent any foreign materials of any kind, which has not been the case with the last three editors! They have begged all zones to participate, and some have when they had something to report or ask. "The cure would be to *discourage* articles that are only of zone 1 local interest", Michiel further stated. I for one am very distressed that censorship of ANY good article that is properly presented to the editor would be ignored because it came from zone one! Print it too! The more articles the better! "In the past we have seen many an increase in the volume of FidoNews due to some local event. Last year it was the Z1C election, just to mention an example. Why?", Michiel asked. Does this mean that an important Fido election such as a Zone or RC Coordinator election is not news-worthy to be in the Fidonews? Michiel also asks: "Why do the sysops in zone 1 flood the world with what for many of us this side of the pond is no more than bickering among the locals? Amusing comment for one who seems to be the prime editor pro tem of zone two. Don't you know how to start a flood of your own? You spend a great deal of your time telling us how much bigger you are than zone one, yet produce only one half of one percent of the submissions. To my knowledge no zone two submission has ever been turned down. I know when I was editor, I worked hard on any zone two submission to remove the illegal ascii characters so that "Make News" program would accept it and hatch the edition. Michiel stated: "The snooze is zone 1 dominated because potential contributors from other zones are put off by the zone 1 dominance. More cocky-poo Michiel. They are no more put off than you. The truth is that most want to read their Snooze, and expect it to be informative, giving them the info to find programs, writers, and a birds eye view of Fidoworld as submitted to the editor. Few articles are published more than once, to dismiss your #1 grievance; and articles in a language you can't read is easy to skip past as not all of the zones speaks only your language. And as for recipes and "tear jerkers" there are a vast majority that like them and your personal FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 11 5 Nov 2001 view has no power except to you personally. Read what you like, skip the rest, and try to let others have their cake too. A little compassion in your words for what the other five zones want would ensure to your good will. Michiel states: "I respect the tradition of FidoNews editors to publish anything not in violation of the (NA?) law." Not true. There is no respect in the many messages you have posted in the echoes, to the editors, and now in Fidonews itself. Your scorn and contempt for the Snooze is obvious to everyone. Michiel lastly states: "Maybe it is time however to review this policy. Maybe it is time to define the topic of FidoNews and restrict articles to those that are on topic". No Michiel, no censorship of civil comment. This is a free society in "NA" and you should be working to have a free society if yours isn't. Anyone can state what they believe just as you have here. It would be a very dull Snooze if your restrictions were applied and a short small issue too! Read Fido rules, they are quite adequate. Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 12 5 Nov 2001 ================================================================= [ FIDONET NOTICES ] ================================================================= A Fond Farewell =============== By Andrea Santos Forwarded to the Fidonews by Ross Cassell 1:18/500 For the last few years I've known a day would come when I'd be writing this message. What I didn't know was the time, day, circumstances or events which would prompt me to do so. In all honesty, I didn't want to know. You participate in an activity or group for so long, there's a comfort zone, but there's also complacency, to the point where you simply don't allow yourself to make the decisions _you_ really need to make. It's also about change and change is tough and it's scary but you'll never know the benefits of other challenges if you don't allow yourself the opportunity to move on. There have been a number of events which have occured in our family this year that have changed all of us forever, and each of us feels a need to embrace new paths and pursue other interests, and we've been proceding along that vein. Santronics the company and our support site and BBS/Mailer continue on and a listing will be maintained in the Nodelist. We still have much to give in the way of programs we provide and will keep on doing what we do well. It's been some 14 years since Hector first explained the concept of shareware to me. Being petrified of anything that looked or smelled of computers and highly skeptical of "honor" systems, I wrote off much of a message it would take me years to understand. But after persistence and encouragement to get me online, I was able to put the pieces together and recognize that my husband was providing real tools for thousands upon thousands of users and system administrators to communicate and provide services, at a hobby level, as well as critical applications for businesses and organizations around the world. In the process, I became computer literate, and was able to connect the dots sufficiently to make my own contributions to a network we both loved and encouraged for so many years. There's no question you get from this life what you are willing to put into it. When I look back at all the years I've been participating in Fidonet, I realize how very fortunate I've been to have made the many many friends and acquaintenances I have, and the communications, laughs tears and real-life experiences I've shared. And I will miss it, but I will also leave knowing I gave it my all, with integrity and principles intact. There are so many individuals to acknowledge and thank, it wouldn't be possible to do so in relatively short order. Past and present, you FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 13 5 Nov 2001 know who you are, and it was a sincere pleasure. There is, however, one person who is entirely the reason why I was here at all and that is my husband, Hector Santos. And this is my opportunity to give him the recognition he's earned and deserves for bringing his vision of communications to life. From creating Offline Mail for Fidonet, to the many programs and utilities he's written, covering every aspect of communications in this network, to his pivotal involvement in Saudi Net and providing the technology to make it happen, to the thousands upon thousands of hours of help he's provided to countless sysops and users, no Developer gave more of himself to this network and none did it better or with more conviction. And, today, I thank him for giving me all of you and for the courage to recognize we've accomplished here what we set out to do and that it's time to move on. With gratitude, @copyright 2001, Andrea Santos, NC135, asantos@santronics.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 14 5 Nov 2001 ================================================================= [ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ] ================================================================= What do you want in the Fidonews? I'd like to give credit to and thank Bj”rn Felten for the patch of the "makenews" program. (notice that your name is proper now, Bj”rn.) The heart of producing the Fidonews is a program called "makenews". Prior to being handed the Editor position, I was working on a "front end" for the system that would make production easier. Even then, I noticed the limits of the "makenews" program. "Makenews" didn't allow ascii characters that could not be typed on a plain typewriter. While this is not a real problem in the U.S.A., it can be an aggravation to other countries and other languages. People whose name has an o with the two dots (™) above it could not write their names properly in a Fidonews article submission. A discussion spurred by some in the Fidonews echo has brought this former limit to life again. While I don't believe that the Fidonews is a place for a lot of "high ascii", the simple desire to see one's name spelled properly in an article for the Fidonews isn't that much to ask imho. Bj”rn Felten offered a solution. Bj”rn offered to make a patch for the "makenews" program or write a new one. Since he offered and I think that being able to see ones name spelled properly is not too much to ask, I sent him the program. I received the patch back rather quickly and applied it. From my tests, the patch worked and the Fidonews can now allow characters for spelling in other languages. What does this mean?? If your name requires a special character to be written properly, the Fidonews should now be able to handle it. If you were using the excuse of not being able to properly spell your name in the Fidonews for not submitting articles, you no longer have that excuse. :-) The Fidonews has taken a step forward? What it DOS NOT mean is that I will accept articles in other than english. English is still the language that is most commonly know in Fidonet. Please limit your use of the allowed ascii to the need for spelling your name, or the name of someone mentioned in your article submission, properly. FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 17 5 Nov 2001 I'm not sure how this is going to work out. I believe in advancing Fidonet and the Fidonews. I hope this will in some way move us toward that goal. My concern is that the "high ascii" might interfere with some BBS programs that offer the Fidonews for reading "online". I'm sure that there could be other problems with this as well. The Fidonews will have to cross those bridges when/if we get to them. Regards, Frank Vest ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 18 5 Nov 2001 ================================================================= [ CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES ] ================================================================= Terrorists Of interest to Canadians only. From (not by) Lesley-Dee Dylan The Pledge We Canadians are finally going to help America with the war on terrorism. We have pledged two of our biggest battle ships, six hundred ground troops and six fighter jets. After the American currency exchange rate was applied, we ended up sending two canoes, six mounties, and a flying squirrel. ----------------------------------------------------------------- We are ready! From: Lesley-Dee Dylan 1:250/201 Take all North American women who are within five years of menopause - train us for a few weeks, outfit us with automatic weapons, grenades, gas masks, moisturizer with SPF15, Prozac, hormones, chocolate, and canned tuna - drop us (parachuted, preferably) across the landscape of Afghanistan, and let us do what comes naturally. Think about it. Our anger quotient alone, even when doing standard stuff like grocery shopping and paying bills, is formidable enough to make even armed men in turbans tremble. We've had our children, we would gladly suffer or die to protect them and their future. We'd like to get away from our husbands, if they haven't left already. And for those of us who are single, the prospect of finding a good man with whom to share life is about as likely as being struck by lightning. We have nothing to lose. We've survived the water diet, the protein diet, the carbohydrate diet, and the grapefruit diet in gyms and saunas across America and never lost a pound. We can easily survive months in the hostile terrain of Afghanistan with no food at all! We've spent years tracking down our husbands or lovers in bars, hardware stores, or sporting events...finding bin Laden in some cave will be no problem. Uniting all the warring tribes of Afghanistan in a new government? Oh, please ... we've planned the seating arrangements for in-laws and extended families at Thanksgiving dinners for years ... we understand tribal warfare. FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 19 5 Nov 2001 Between us, we've divorced enough husbands to know every trick there is for how they hide, launder, or cover up bank accounts and money sources. We know how to find that money and we know how to seize it ... with or without the government's help! Let us go and fight. The Taliban hates women. Imagine their terror as we crawl like ants with hot-flashes over their godforsaken terrain. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Shame on you From: Warren Bonner My 7-year-old daughter came home from school one day, held up her middle finger, and asked me what it meant. I was so shocked that I could say only, "Shame on you," followed by, "If anyone does that to you, just say, "Shame on you" to that person. A few weeks later we were at the dinner table when my husband let out a huge belch. I reprimanded him by saying, "Shame on you." Imagine my husband's shock when my daughter held up her middle finger, showed it to him, and exclaimed, "Mom, you forgot to give Daddy the 'shame on you' sign." 8^) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-45 Page 20 5 Nov 2001 ================================================================= [ TODD COCHRANE'S FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ] ================================================================= *Fidonet/BBS Software Listing's* -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- BBS Software -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- BBBS Home Page b@bbbs.net http://www.bbbs.net/ ELEBBS- The Elevator Software Productions Web Page elebbs@elebbs.com http://www.elebbs.com/ Hermes II Project (Mac) info@HermesII.org http://www.hermesii.org/ Maximus BBS Support Page (Non Official) sales@lainus.com http://www.vector11.com/maximus/ MBSE BBS Michiel Broek + development team mbroek@users.sourceforge.net http://mbse.sourceforge.net 2:2802/2 Michiel Broek. This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line should be with an * before it. The second time and second line should without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language might not be accepted. (the only real rule in this whole thing) Remember, we really don't know who might be reading the Fidonews. Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
