TEN REASONS WHY I CANNOT BE A MORMON

1. ĸMORMONISM DOES NOT TEACH THAT THE BIBLE IS THE INFALLIBLE WORK OF
GOD. ĸĸ"We ĸbelieve the Bible to the the Word of God as far as it ĸis
translated ĸcorrectly; ĸĸwe also believe the book of Mormon to be ĸthe
word of God" (Articles of Faith, No. 8).
As ĸChristians we believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old ĸand ĸNew
Testaments ĸto ĸthe ĸthe verbally inspired Word ĸof ĸGod, ĸĸthe ĸfinal
authority ĸfor ĸfaith and life, ĸinerrant in ĸthe ĸoriginal ĸwritings,
infallible and God-breathed (2 ĸTim. ĸ3:16-17; ĸ2 Pet. ĸ1:20-21; ĸMatt
5:18).
2. ĸĸMORMONISM TEACHES THAT GOD IS AN EXALTED MAN AND HAS A ĸPHYSICAL
BODY. ĸĸ"God himself was once as we are now, ĸand is an exalted ĸman"
(Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, ĸpg. 345). ĸ"The Father has a
body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's..." ĸ(Doc. ĸ& Cov., ĸSec.
131:22)
The Bible says, ĸ"God is not a man..." ĸ(Num. ĸ23:19). ĸ"God is a
Spirit; ĸĸand they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and ĸin
truth" ĸĸ(John 4:24). ĸ"A spirit hath not flesh and ĸbones..." ĸĸ(Lk.
24:39).
3. MORMONISM TEACHES THAT CHRIST AND THE DEVIL ARE BROTHERS. "...that
Lucifer, ĸthe son of morning, ĸis our elder brother and the brother of
Jesus Christ" (Mormon Doctrine by Bruce McConkie, pp. 163-4).
The Bible says that the devil is a created being, ĸcreated by God.
"thou ĸwast ĸperfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast ĸcreated,
till ĸiniquity ĸwas found in thee" ĸ(Ezekiel 28:15). ĸĸ"For ĸby ĸHim
(Christ) ĸwere all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in
earth, ĸvisible and invisible, whether they be thrones, ĸof dominions,
or principalities, ĸor powers; ĸall things were created by Him and for
Him..." (Col. 1:15-17).
4. MORMONISM TEACHES THAT JESUS WAS MARRIED AND THE HE IS POLYGAMOUS.
"We ĸsay ĸit ĸwas ĸJesus Christ who was married at ĸCana ĸof ĸGalilee"
(Journal of Discourses, ĸVol 2, p. 80). ĸMormonism teaches that Jesus
was ĸthe ĸnatural ĸchild ĸof Adam and Mary. ĸ"When ĸthe ĸVirgin ĸMary
conceived ĸthe Child Jesus....He was not begotten by the ĸHoly ĸGhost.
And who is his Father? ĸHe is the first of the human family" (Brigham
Young, Journal of Discourses, pp. 50-51).
The Bible says, ĸ"In the beginning was the Word (Christ), ĸand the
Word was with God, and the Word was God;...The Word was made flesh and
dwelt among us..." ĸ(John 1:1, 14). ĸ"Then Mary said unto the angel,
How ĸshall ĸthis ĸbe, ĸseeing that I know not a man? ĸAnd ĸthe ĸangel
answered... The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee..."(Lk. 1:34-35).
5. ĸĸMORMONISM TEACHES THAT THE TRUE CHURCH CEASED TO EXIST UNTIL ĸIT
WAS RESTORED TO JOSEPH SMITH. ĸThe church (LDS) was restored April 6,
1830 by Joseph Smith (Doc. & Cov., 20:1).
Jesus ĸChrist said, ĸ"I will build my church and the gates of hell
shall not prevail against it" ĸ(Matt. ĸ16:18). ĸ"for other foundation
can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ" (1 Cor.
3:11). ĸĸ"...And ĸare built upon the foundation of the ĸapostles ĸand
prophets, ĸĸJesus ĸChrist himself being the chief cornerstone" ĸĸ(Eph.
2:20).
6. ĸĸMORMONISM TEACHES ANOTHER (PERVERTED) ĸGOSPEL THAN THAT ĸOF ĸTHE
BIBLE. ĸĸThe gospel to Mormonism is: ĸ"Faith, ĸRepentance, ĸBaptism,
Receiving the Holy Spirit by laying on of hands, ĸMorality, ĸĸLoyalty,
Tithing, ĸWord of Wisdom, Duty Celestial Marriage (for eternity)" (LDS
chart of FREE AGENCY and Articles of Faith, No. 4).
The Bible says, "Moreover brethren, I ĸdeclare unto you the gospel
that he was buried, ĸand that he rose again the third day according to
the scriptures" ĸ(1 ĸCor. 15:1, ĸ3-4). ĸ"if any man preach any other
gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed" (Gal.
1:9).
7. ĸĸMORMONISM ĸTEACHES ĸSALVATION FOR THE THE DEAD ĸBY ĸPROXY ĸWATER
BAPTISM. This doctrine is based on one misunderstood Scripture: "Else
what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, ĸif the dead ĸrise
not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?" (1 Cor. 15:29).
Paul ĸdid not practice baptism for the dead. ĸHe excluded himself
by using the pronoun "they" rather than "we" ĸor "ye". He is asking a
question ĸrather than making a statement. ĸ"It is appointed unto ĸman
once to die, but after this the judgment" (Heb. 9:27).
8. ĸMORMONISM TEACHES GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH FOR THE DEAD. ĸ"Let ĸus,
therefore, ĸas a church and a people, and as Latter-day Saints, ĸoffer
unto the Lord an offering in righteousness; ĸand let us present in his
holy temple, when it is finished, a book containing the records of our
dead, ĸwhich shall be worth of all acceptation" ĸ(Doc. ĸ& ĸCov., ĸSec.
128:24).
The ĸBible ĸsays, ĸĸ"Neither ĸgive ĸheed ĸto ĸfables ĸand ĸendless
genealogies" ĸĸ(1 ĸĸTim. ĸĸ1:4). ĸ"but ĸavoid ĸfoolish ĸquestion ĸand
genealogies..." (Titus 3:9).
9. ĸĸMORMONISM TEACHES THAT THERE ARE MODERN DAY PROPHETS AND ĸMODERN
DAY REVELATIONS FROM GOD. Mormonism claims that Joseph Smith received
the ĸAaronic ĸPriesthood ĸfrom John ĸthe ĸBaptist. ĸĸThe ĸMelchizedek
Priesthood and Apostleship ĸwas ĸrestored ĸby Peter, ĸĸJames ĸand John
shortly afterwards in 1829 (Doc. & Cov., Sec. 13).
The Bible says, ĸ"God...hath in these last days spoken unto us ĸby
his ĸSon, ĸwhom he hath appointed heir of all things, ĸby whom also he
made ĸthe worlds" ĸ(Heb. ĸ1:1-2). ĸThe test of a prophet is given ĸin
Deut. 18:20-22.
10. ĸĸMORMONISM ĸTEACHES THAT SALVATION DEPENDS UPON ĸGOOD ĸWORKS ĸAND
ACCEPTANCE ĸOF ĸJOSEPH SMITH. ĸ"No man who rejects the ĸtestimony ĸof
Joseph ĸSmith can enter the kingdom of God" ĸ(Doctrines of ĸSalvation,
vol. 1 pg. 190). "Men have work to do it they would obtain salvation"
(Doctrines of Salvation. vol. 3, pg 91).
The ĸBible ĸteaches ĸthat salvation is provided ĸby ĸJesus ĸChrist
alone, ĸĸ"for ĸthere is none other name under heaven given among ĸmen,
whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:10-12). ĸ"For by grace are ye saved
through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Not
of works, lest any man should boast" (Eph. 2:8-9).
