News Update: Clinton & Iran

			by J. Orlin Grabbe

	1. Bob Strauss lead a high-level Democratic
delegation to talk to President William Jefferson Clinton.
They asked Clinton to withdraw his name as a contender for
the 1996 Presidential delegation. They don't want an October
Surprise, they said. They said they knew from Kenneth Starr
that an indictment of Hillary Clinton would be forthcoming
between the Democratic convention and the November
election. Apparently other issues, such as that of Clinton's
fitness to be President--allegedly including Clinton's excessive
use of cocaine--were raised.

Meanwhile, leading Republicans like House Speaker
Newt Gingrich know that a second Fifth Column packet has
been prepared for Bob Dole. But to this point it would seem
they are waiting for someone else to do their job for them.
Will there be a revolt at the Republican convention and a push
for a new nominee? Or will Republicans twiddle their thumbs
until Dole is forced to withdraw from the race?

	2. Israeli radio says Israel has been told by the U.S.
that it will likely attack Iran soon. According to the Isarali
radio station Arutz7:

	U.S. LIKELY TO ATTACK
	IRAN--The United States
Army is likely to receive an
order in the coming days to
	attack Iranian targets,
	including nuclear bases and
Iranian ships. This will be in
	retaliation for Teheran's
	involvement in the late-June
	attack against the Marines in
	Saudi Arabia and the downing
	of the TWA airliner. The
	Americans have reported to
	Israel regarding their plans to
	attack Iran.

Whether this policy of apparent overkill will have any effect on
the threatened Syrian terror campaign in the U.S. is not at all
clear.
