Porter is an internet utility to scan a host for ports open for public
connection or a range of IPs for connections. It can be used to find
servers not listed with InterNIC or just to scan a host for the
services it provides.

Here's how to start using Porter ASAP!

1. Decompress the package which Porter came in. If you are reading
this, you should already done that.
2. Delete all the files you do not want.
3. Start your internet connection.
4. Execute Porter and have fun!

In order to keep the size of the distribution archive down, some of
the files which are not developed by me or are the same for all
versions of this program is not included. If in the event that you
require to acquire these files, please go to my homepage and click on

Here's a BRIEF explanation of the commands in the menus.

On the Porter main menu, you will find:

Port Scanner Activates the port scanner.
IP Scanner Activates the IP scanner.
Now Scanning: Information on the host/port being scanned.
Start Scanning Starts the scanning process. After you
click on this, it will change to Stop
Scanning. Clicking on Stop Scanning will
abort the scan. Note that if you abort
the scan, the fields will change to
reflect the last port/IP you scanned.
View Log Shows the log menu.
Exit Quits Porter.

Under Port Scanner, you will find:

Hostname: The name of the host to scan for ports.
Starting Port: The number of the port to start with.
Ending Port: The number of the port to end with. If you
wish to scan indefinitely, you must put
0 in this field.

Under IP Scanner, you will find:

Starting IP: The IP (E.G: 127.0.0.1) to start scanning.
Ending IP: The IP (E.G: 127.0.0.1) to stop scanning.
If you wish to scan indefinitely, you must
put a value at least 2 less than Starting
IP.
Port: The port to scan for connections.

On the Porter log menu, you will find:

The log This is where all the scan details are. If
you wish to clear the log, you can either
double-click on the log or click on Clear.
Note that if the length of the log exceeds
10240 bytes, it will be truncated.
Clear Clears the log.
Save Saves the log to file.
Hide Log Hides the log menu.

- Frequently Asked Questions -

-> Q: When I start Porter, it says that I do not have some of the
files. Where can I get them?
A: You should be able to get ALL the files required by all the
utilities at my homepage. If you can't, leave me a message.

-> Q: Windows reported that I have a "device unavailible" error. What
should I do?
A: Your copy of winsock.dll is not compatible with Porter. Get a
new one. Note that the copy of winsock I am using is the one
supplied with Windows 95.

-> Q: When I start the program, Windows 95 says that the language file
is missing and refuses to run the program.
A: This is quite a common problem. There are 2 solutions I can
think of. They are:

1. Install Visual Basic 4.0. Once installed, VB4 will set the
language.dll option in your win.ini.
2. Set the language.dll option yourself. An easy way to do this
is to run setup, change the language to something else. Then
save the new settings. After that, if you want the language
to be the old one, then run setup again and change it back.
Note that this is not guranteed to work, but it worked for
me.
